Hi Kerry
No sorry, don't know who Matthew Harmer's parents were or much about his family. I only know he was born 24 Dec. 1810. I assume he was also born in Brightling, only because Mary Ann Skinner was born there and the Skinner family lived there a good while.

Hi Leslie
I will have a search then and see what I can find out about him. It would be interesting to link him into the tree.

Dear Kerry I think you might be quite interested in this part of the Harmer family - as previously mentioned Mary Ann & Matthew left Sussex in 1849 with 10 small children to immigrate to Minnesota. Seemingly they had quite a journey. They first settled in Wisconsin and then moved to Faribault Co., Minnesota where they were attacked by Sioux Indians and had to move on. They finally settled in Dodge Co. Minnesota. I found a website that has a "History of Matthew Harmer" his obituary, and Mary Ann's and the obituaries of about every Harmer in Minnesota!!! I particularly liked the part in the"History of Matthew Harmer" that reads"....She (MaryAnn) was a playmate of Queen Victoria and he worked in the stables for the Queen"!!!!!! They could sure tell some tall tales in those days... Happy Hunting - I would be interested to hear at some point how you got on. All the best Leslie

Unfortunately the database that may well give his baptism in minutes - the Sussex Family History Group database is off air at the moment due to hackers
So it may have to wait a bit but I will do some searching.

Hi Leslie
I would recommend
Highways and Byways in Sussex by E. V Lucas
First published in 1904 it is not strictly speaking a history book but has a lot of snippets in it about old Sussex and in any case the up to date stuff is over 100 years old. There is a chapter on Sussex dialect which is interesting.
Well worth getting hold of - it is still in print, although mine is a 1928 copy.
