FINNELEY in Swinderby
« on: Friday 19 June 09 16:49 UTC (UK) »

I wonder whether anyone can help me, please.

My 3x great-grandmother was Ann FINNELEY, born in 1799 in Girton, Notts to Robert and Mary Finneley. She later married in Canwick, Lincs.

I have just found a baptism of John Finneley in Swinderby in 1793, also to a Robert and Mary, which makes me wonder whether the Finneley family came from Lincs rather than Notts.

Looking at the Swinderby records on the BIVRI I find a baptism of a Robert Finneley in 1762 and wonder whether that is also my ancestor.

If anyone has access to the Swinderby records and could tell me if there is a marriage for Robert and Mary in the years before 1793, that would be most helpful.

Similarly, I would like to know more about John and Mary, parents of Robert and various other children between 1762-1774. Is there a marriage for them in Swinderby?

If anyone knows any more about this family, I would be very interested to hear, please.

Many thanks,
John

You seem to be in luck Smiley

My Lincs FHS Graffoe Deanery marriage index has

1761 at Swinderby, John FENELY to Mary JEEVE

You will find submitted entries in the IGI for John FENELEY to Mary JOOVE with a date of 4 May 1761

You may wish to consider the baptism of a Mary JEEVE in 1739, 2 or 3 miles away at Thurlby.

Hi Geoff,

Thank you very much - that's really helpful  Smiley

I'll have a look at the Mary Jeeve in Thurlby.

I don't suppose your marriage index has anything for Robert and Mary in the 1780/90s does it?

Many thanks once again,
John

Hello John,  glad you found the info interesting. I researched the Feneleys (Finneleys) some years back after my grandmother died (her being a Feneley before marriage). I did manage to gather a fair amount of information on the name and have contact with a number of modern day Feneleys from my research. I had collected a good number of wills and managed to track down one the farms that Roberts father John owned in Swinderby.
I am just getting back into doing some more research in an attempt to get the name back further in time.

Below is the gravestone inscription of Roberts father John Feneley of Swinderby. The gravestone is no longer present, and the inscription was actually from a book written by a Swinderby resident back in 1907 which I found in the Lincoln library.

John Feneley who died 21st July 1811 aged 76 years.
Farewell my dearest friends, I must away.
Death calls me hence, I can no longer stay.
Farewell all my earthly joys, I go to have,
The endless pleasures of the saints above.
Farewell my pains, disorders, doubts and fears.
In heaven theres neither sickness, grief nor tears.
All I have foreseen below I now resign.
Vain world, farewell, but welcome joy divine.

I will contact you again via your PM.

regards

steve
