James Robert Crothers born South Carolina abt 1801
« on: Monday 22 June 09 22:00 UTC (UK) »

According to 1861 England census, my GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers was born about 1801 in South Carolina to British Parents.  From other sources, I have discovered his full name was probably James Robert C Crothers.  After his birth in South Carolina, the next time I can place him is abt 1826 when his son John King Crothers was born in Ireland, so he appears to have travelled to Ireland between 1801 and 1826.  Thereafter he went to Scotland abt 1827 and then to Newcastle upon Tyne, England where he stayed until he died in 1862.  I would be greatful for any help in finding any record of his birth in South Carolina or any reference to him in any census in South Carolina.

regards

I don't know too much about early census returns (my family is Canadian), but this site might be of help:

Using the exact spelling of the name, there were 6 Crothers families in America in 1800: 1 in New York, 5 in Pennsylvania.  (I believe it only listed head of household.)

1810 Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina
James Crouther (head of household?)
The form is very basic; I do not know how to read it.

1810 York County, SC
James Carothers (Head of Household?)

Unfortunately, there are quite a few variations of the name Crothers in 1810 in South Carolina.  I did not see any Crothers in 1810 (with exact spelling) in South Carolina.

Hi Lisa, many thanks for your suggestions, I will have a look through the archive website.  Where do you get your information from for 1810 Crothers, is that from a census?  Do0es it give any ages?

You are right there are a number of variations on the name.  I have seen James Robert with the surname Crother, Crothers, Crowther, Crowthers and Carruthers.  I could well believe Carothers and even Crouthers.

Peter, I found the information on a census image.  There are no titles at the top of the page, but comparing the image against a definition of the 1810 census, it appears that this is correct:

James Carothers, one male age 10 to 16, one male age 16 to 26, one male 45 and older.  One female age 0 to 10, one female age 45 and older.  There is a "1" in the last column; I do not know to what this refers.

I am not certain I've read the census correctly.

Many thanks Lisa, it's all a bit vague isn't it but I suppose that's all there was in those days.
