A Birth in DAMASCUS
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 18:54 UTC (UK) »

My great grandfather was born in the City of Damascus in 1846 which at that time was part of Turkey.[It did not become Syria until 1924]

His name was George Worthy and he did come to England,he married in Bradford in 1874 and died in London in 1887. He appears on the census of 1871 and 1881 but on no other. He states his father's name as Nicholas Worthy on his marriage certificate whom he states was a builder. The family were Catholic.

How do I obtain a birth record/cert?

I have tried writing to the Turkish Embassy and the Syrian Embassy. I have had searches done for a consular birth certificate by the NRO,they say there is not one. I tried writting to St.Georges Melkite Church in Damascus who so far have not replied. I have no idea why Nicholas Worthy went to Damascus nor do I know the name of Georges Mother. The reason could be military as there were several ritual killings at the time attributed to Jewish sections of Damascus society.

Where does the name "Nossley", given to one of his daughters, come from, do you know? I wonder if there's any clue there.
He seems to have moved around a lot - I'm presuming that the address/witnesses on the marriage certificate wouldn't be much help.

If he was a British subject on the censuses his father must have been a British subject. As the family were Catholic I'd wonder about Irish records.

Hi,The name "Nossley" is unique as far as I know,I have no concrete idea where it came from but surmize that it was probably his mothers name. She was the daughter of George of Damascus and his first child. It is most likely the reason that George married Mary Teresa Flynn in 1874.

A point about that marriage, when the marriage took place in Bradford on March 19th 1874 the ages of the bride and groom were stated as George 28 and Mary 21. This could not be true as Mary was born at 8 Style Street Manchester on 24 February 1856. Her father was a Dyer and he and the rest of her family left for New York before the married. In those days 21 was the age of majority and parental consent was required for the marriage. She did not have it and said she was 21 when in fact she was 18. The witnesses as far as I can tell were merely "Passing trade"[Bernard Cullen and Eleanor Cleary]

Both the Worthys and the Flynns had Irish connections the Flynns came from Tyronne and it was said that the Worthys were related to Bishop John Worthy of Liverpool know as "John the builder". John the builder was born in Nova Scotia Canada in 1814[I think] and came to England via Narvan,County Meath.

To speak the truth I did consider the "Builder" connection George said his father was a builder but Bishop John was a Catholic and celebut but there is a remote chance that other members of the family may have been in the same line.
