Hi
Can you quote the census reference for 1901?    I can't see one born 1855 living in Northumberland though there are others.  My first thought is that a tollman collected the tolls on a road but I'd rather see the image to see whether that is a likely scenario.

Ah.   Found him RG13 4779 61 51
It says quite distinctly that his occupation is Collector of Tolls.  Living at Blue House, North Rd number 1 in the civil parish of St Andrew's in Newcastle.   You would need to look at a map to see if that might be a suitable toll road.
But in 1891 he is a Corporation Toll collector living at 40 West Street so that makes it clearer and he is obviously not sitting waiting to charge the road users but going out to collect tolls of some sort from people.

Hi  Cheesy

It's just down the road from me. A very well known landmark at the north end  of the town moor on the A1 (Great North Road).

He could have been a Toll Collector on the old Redheugh Bridge.

Blue House was/is isolated building in south east corner of Dukes Moor.  Today very busy road roundabout B1318 (once the A1, Great North Road) and A189 ( road up Northumberland coast)

Just in the very northern part of Newcastle's St Andrew's Parish, bordering with Gosforth St Nicholas's Parish

Occupants of Blue House would have had a good view of the horses when Newcastle Racecourse was on the very adjacent Town Moor in 1800s.

Coincidentally The Hoppings started yesterday on the Town Moor. Newcastle folk will call this, the biggest fair in Europe ( But I think Nottingham folk call their Goose Fair the biggest)

I am not certain of this but I think it would have been a double toll booth, for the north/south traffic and the east/west traffic . In any case it would have been a very busy Toll.

Tolls collected in early times was income for the Parish to finance road maintenance.

As I said in Reply #3, it's about 1/4 mile from me and I'll be passing it within the next hour. I'll see if I can find anywhere to park and take a photo.

The link to the photo that I put up shows it's position very clearly.

It was one of my driving routes when I was learning to drive in the early 1970s.

He would  be unlikely to be collecting Road Tolls in 1901.

From 1663 to 1836 many British roads were improved by collecting tolls from travellers towards their maintenance. Toll houses were built beside barriers across the road, known as turnpikes, which halted the traveller for the toll to be collected. Such toll or turnpike roads had to be approved by a Private Act of Parliament, setting up a turnpike trust. Promoters also had to deposit plans of turnpikes with the county, borough or parish authorities concerned. Turnpike roads were profitable in the stagecoach era, but tolls declined with the coming of the railways. Most turnpike trusts were dissolved in the 1880s and 1890s.

I think "Corporation Toll Collector" may be the clue here.  As in 1891 he was not living at Blue House but in West Street I doubt if he was actually collecting road tolls.  What else could they have been?

From the OED Toll; A charge for the privilege of bringing goods for sale to a market or fair, or of setting up a stall.

I also managed to get a quick shot of the plaque on the wall of the house . it was taken while the car was moving so a bit blurred. I think it reads:

Hi

I noticed mention of the Blue House.

I have a colleague who inquired about the Blue House some while ago.  She was informed that it was blue because it was the policeman's house (perhaps more recently) and has to stay that colour now as it (I presume) is a protected landmark.  I think the present owners tried to get permission to get it painted white.

This of course may all just be gossip.
