Missing from 1861 census
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 09:25 UTC (UK) »

I cannot find any trace of gr gr grandfather John BROOME born 1820 in Weston Staffs and his wife Sarah Ann and younger family. I have found older children of the family.
I have tried variations of the surname - BROOM, BROWNE. BROMER etc.
Has anyone any ideas?

Hi Irene

Many of the 1861 pieces are mising, which might explain their absence. Do you know where they are likely to be?

You can search for missing pieces on the National Archives site:

This lists the missing numbers and explains how to find which areas are missing. Scroll down and click on 'click here':

John Broome was a blacksmith and was living with his family in Forge Lane Dawley in 1851
By 1871 he was a school caretaker living in Poole Hill Square Dawley.
I have traced Forge Lane in 1861 but there is no trace of John.
Dawley is piece 1855.

on 1851 census John's wife was showm as ANN
His children were:
ANN  9 Dawley
THOMAS ( my gr grandfather) 6 Dawley
MARIA 5 Liverpool
JANE 2 Liverpool
LUCY 1 Dawley

In 1861 I have found on other census returns
ELIZA 22 Dawley working as a servant in Dawley
ANN 17 Dawley a servant  also in Dawley
MARIA 15  (MARRIAN on census) visiting HOLT family relations in Liverpool

in 1871 surname mistranscribed as BROWN

I'm now stepping through Dawley images starting with  ED 6 to see if they have been very badly mostranscribed. They're there somewhere as their later children were born there and there are no obvious missing pieces.

Will report back!
