Brocksopp, Derby look up please. COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 15:31 UTC (UK) »

Trying to find a marriage for Patience Brocksop.

I`ve found an ancestor of mine John Askey Brocksop who was christened 26th Oct 1835 Sutton Cum Duckmanton, Derby (as per details shown on the LDS website ).

It lists his mother as Patience, something I hadn`t known previously.

Can`t find them until the 1861 Census, he is 24 and his mother is aged 52 and a widower. He marries in 1864 and starts his own family. Have found Patience in 1881 and 1891.

Would be great to hear from anyone who has access to information on Patience Brocksop although modern day spelling appears to have added a "p" on the end of Brocksop.

Many thanks in advance. Steve

Now this may be a red herring, maybe clutching at too thin a straw, but I think it is worth thinknig about.

I see on 1861 that Patience is described as a Farmers widow and her place of birth looks like "Haltmuckel" or something like that!

How about
1851
HO107 2147 304 29

North Wingfield
Henry Brocksopp 49 Farmer bn Ault Hucknell (see the connection!!)
Phoebe 43 bn Ault Hucknell Bramley Lane

John 17 bn Northedge Ashover
Henry 15 bn Northedge

Elizabeth 11 bn N
Phoebe 8 bn N
Hannah 6 bn N
Mary 4 bn N
MAry Gann (or Genn?) wid 50 relative bn Bramley Lane Ault hucknell
Martha Blocksopp 49 unm relative bn Dronfield

Now - is it possible that Phoebe is Patience??

However, in 1861 Henry is now widowed
so Phoebe has died

so she cant be Patience!

how about this is 1841 for Patience?

Here she is in 1851
Indexed as Catrina ... but I am happy image is Patience

Ho107 2338 442 29
Regent Street Sheffield
Patience Brocksopp 39 upholsterer bn Derbyshire
William Naylor 53 visitor bn Sheffield
Mary Naylor 53 visitor bn Sheff.

It looks as if she is Unmarried rather than widowed, but hard to read. Maybe the 'farmers widow' bit was to keep her respectability once her son joined her!

Again no John with her in 1851, I wonder who brought him up.

And for the icing on the cake

IGI has marriage
29 Dec 1817  - Ault Hucknell
Rebecca Brocksopp to John Saunders

So it looks like :
Patience was Rebeccas sister.
John was illegitimate
John was brought up by Aunt Rebecca but ten lived with mother in adulthood
The Brocksopp family from Ault Hucknell (Phoebe and Henry etc) are probably closely linked. May have given Patience the "farmers widow" idea if the Brocksopps were a farming family.

Hi all

I though the name seemed familiar. There is also someone else researching the Brocksopp name on this site.

Hiya lizdb, janan and sunflower,  Grin

Thank you very much for all your replies and the information enclosed. I had actually printed off the 1851 Census this afternoon showing nephew and the Saunders family but just couldn`t quite make the connection.

I imagined Patience was in the area in 1851 as I found her this afternoon when searching the historical directories website. She is listed in 1852 as living at 8 Regent Street, Sheffield as an upholstress. Although quite how she goes from upholstress to living on a farm baffles me unless she inherited it Huh

Just wondering whether the LDS details of the christening stating he was christened on 26th October 1835 John Askey Brocksopp give us any clues as to who the father may have been. A certain Mr Askey??? Thought I remember reading somewhere that the fathers name was sometimes incoporated into the childs name so unmarried mothers could give an insight as to who the father was??

I`ve just found a marriage on LDS for John Brocksopp to Hannah Shaw 16th July 1821 at Sutton Cum Duckmanton. If this is Patience and Rebecca`s parents then they where also born out of wedlock Shocked

Anyway, thanks very much, you`ve all been great with your prompt replies. Grin

All the best Steve

Wow!  Just browsing through Rootschat and here I find some long lost and  very distant relatives.   My great great grandparents were John Saunders and Rebecca Brocksopp who married at Ault Hucknall on 29 December 1817.

For those who do not know Derbyshire by the way, Ault Hucknall is quite near Hardwick Hall.

My great grandmother was  Elizabeth Saunders (daughter of John and Rebecca) who married Joseph Millns on 20 June 1843 at North Wingfield. She is the Elizabeth age  26  in the posting for the 1841 census in Skegby by Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

So thanks for your brilliant detective work everyone as I had hit a brickwall and could find nothing with regard to the parents of John Saunders or Rebecca. Brocksopp.

Thanks a million!   I had more or less given up on them.

Incidentally, any information on Joseph Millns who married Elizabeth would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Hi, just been reading the posts again.  I do not think that John Brocksopp and Hannah Shaw married 16 July 1821 were the parents of Rebecca and Patience.  After all Rebecca was born around 1799 and married John Saunders on 29 December 1817.  It looks as if John Brocksopp could have been a brother of Rebecca and Patience or  some other relative.

cheers, marp
