Hi, According to the 1861 census, my GGGG Grandfather's Occupation was a "Table Knife Foster" He was living in Sheffield at the time. His wife is down as a "Table Knife Hoster". Any ideas? I'm stumped. Cheers, Terry

Hi, Thank you to all who replied to my email. All I can say is I've copied it word for word. Mind you, it's nice to know I'm not the only one that's stumped by these occupational terms! Evie, where do I look for the reference? & what will it look like? Thank you all again for your time. Cheers, Terry.

Table Knife HAFTER - w/o checking, I'd say he put the handles onto the 'haft' of a knife

Hi Terry
Pleased you got it sorted.
Just picked up my e mails and I see Andrea and Past Master have already had a look at the original - thanks both
Past Master is correct, looking at a list of old occupations a description of a Haft Presser is given as:
"Employed in the Sheffield cutlery industry pressing bone/horn into knife handles (hafts). 19c."
