Table Knife Foster.
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 13:04 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
According to the 1861 census, my GGGG Grandfather's Occupation was
a "Table Knife Foster" He was living in Sheffield at the time. His wife is down
as a "Table Knife Hoster". Any ideas? I'm stumped.
                                           Cheers,

Just a thought, Terry - it couldn't actually say "cutler" could it (as in 'cutlery').

Sheffield was the centre for making cutlery.

Hi,
Thank you to all who replied to my email. All I can say is I've copied it word
for word. Mind you, it's nice to know I'm not the only one that's stumped by
these occupational terms!
Evie, where do I look for the reference? & what will it look like?
Thank you all again for your time.
                                                     Cheers,

The 1861 reference will start with RG9.   It should then have a piece number followed by folio number and page number.  eg RG9 1234 56 7
If you scroll to the bottom or side of the image you sould see the piece number.  The folio is on every second page at the top and the page on every page.  Alternatively if you look at the details rather than the original image it gives the reference at the bottom.
If you cannot find it just give the name and address and someone will find them.

Hi Terry Smiley

Pleased you got it sorted.

Just picked up my e mails and I see Andrea and Past Master have already had a look at the original - thanks both Smiley

Past Master is correct, looking at a list of old occupations a description of a Haft Presser is given as:

"Employed in the Sheffield cutlery industry pressing bone/horn into knife handles (hafts). 19c."
