Parteen Co Limerick
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 13:35 UTC (UK) »

The 1911 UK census for overseas military establishments has (I believe) my great uncle Patrick Ryan, a 22 yr old private in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. It gives his birthplace as Parteen (although written Parkeen) Co Limerick. Am I right in thinking this would be the parish of Parteen, - as the village of Parteen appears to be in Co Clare- or is there really a Parkeen as well?

Parteen is in the County of Clare but the Parish which is called St Patricks is in the dioces of Limerick which is the bit that is confusing you. What names are you looking for in Parteen?

Hallo Margaret

I'm afraid I am looking for a Ryan family so I'm not holding out much hope of success! Undecided

We have always been told the family is from Co Limerick; I have found the older sister Mary in service in Co Clare in 1911 with a birthplace apparently in Glin, but I believe this may have been given as a birthplace as the 2 younger children (Anne and Michael) were at the Industrial School in Glin (Fortunately they were visiting her at the time of the 1911 census - one of my few strokes of luck with this family). Soldier Paddy I have just found in the 1911 UK census in the Royal Munsters, so there is one more sister, Elizabeth, to go when the 1911 Limerick census goes online...

Then it will be a case of just waiting for the 1901 census to go online Grin

Hi Tracey
Have you looked at the 1901 census for Co Clare www.clarelibrary.ie Go to the genealogy link and it gives you links for many things including 1901 census. Concentrate on the parishes of St Munchins ( Parteen was in this Limerick parish in 1901 and later in the parish of St Patricks ) and the parish of Kiltannanlea ( now St Senans Clonlara )which is also very close to Parteen.
All my O'Reilly family came from Parteen and lived about 2 miles from where i live today but i live in Clonlara. I have some records purchased for O'Reilly reilly with Ryan mentioned in them. I cant remember offhand but there is definately one with a William Ryan in it which i suspect isnt one of my Reillys. I will have a look and send it to you if you would like.

Hope this helps
good luck
