Help wanted reading parishe record Kirkgunzion 1812
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 07:46 UTC (UK) »

I have obtained a birth record for John BOWES from Scotland's People. John was born in the Parish of Kirkgunzion on May 3 1812. The record reads:

May  1  3  John ?? son of Samuel Bowes and Jean Davidson in Sheetby

At least the last word is the best I can make of it. Is there a place of this, or a similar, name in or near Kirkgunzion? What does the "1" signify? The column heading is illegible.

Supplementary question: Is there a Bluevale or Blue Vale in the area?

Any assistance welcome.

Hi Jim

First of all, I think the 1 3 means born 1(of May) and baptized 3rd (of May). I'm not sure of the place name. Have you checked maps for it?

It looks like Shiel-by to me.

I've just been looking at an old map of the area: http://www.nls.uk/maps/joins/649.html

and can only come up with Shielings (meaning summer pasture) to the SE of Kirkgunzeon itself.

Thanks for the help. When I compare the record with your interpretation I can see that it might well be Shiel-lings. Perhaps that is an old spelling of Shieling.

As far as the date is concerned, Scotland's People have interpreted it as 3 May. However, when I look down the page, I see that you may be correct.

Given it was early May, it is quite likely that they might have been in the Sheiling.. There were small bothys built for summer living  on the summer grazings Smiley

Unless it was taken over for all year habitation at that time. It would be interesting to know.

Thanks again Gadget and Audrey. I am still needing to confirm that this i the John Bowes I am seeking. He seems to bew the only one on record as having been born in Scotland in 1812. If only I could find the birth or marriage of my John Bowes's son, Thomas Russell Bowes or the marriage of John Bowes and Janet Russell. None of these seem to be on ScotlandsPeople.

If you give us some rough dates  for Thomas Bowes, we might be able to help.  Do you have him on censuses and , if so, where?

The best information I have is from Thomas Russell Bowes's marriage certificate (here in Australia) where he states his place of birth as Kirkintilloch, Scotland. His age indicates a birthdate of c. 1838. His parents were John Bowes and Janet Russell. John brought his family to Australia before 1842 when he remarried. He was a farmer, so the Shielings fits in.

Thanks for you interest and continuing help. I'm in Australia and it's far past the witching hour, so I'm off to bed.

For what it's worth, Jim, there's no John Bowes showing on the 1841 that fits yours. This suggests that the one that you've found might well be the correct one.
