Linen/wool draper..where is he?
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 04:51 UTC (UK) »

Hi folks
I don't know if anyone will be able to help with this
I have John Newton given as a linen/wool draper on all his 6 children's baptism records between 1793 and 1805, St John, Newcastle.
I cannot find him listed in the directories...there are only a couple for that timeframe that I've been able to find.

1/ Is it possible he had a shop?
2/ Could he have worked in someone else's shop? Wouldn't he be a linen draper's assistant in that case?
3/ I believe he died before 1825 as he is not mentioned on his daughter's death notice (Newcastle Courant)

Added 4/ Assuming he was a linen draper and assuming he would have been reasonably "well off" could he have left a will and how do I go about about finding out please without a definate death date??

Any thoughts would be very welcome
Sylvia

Sylvia,

1/ He could have had a shop
2/ He could have worked in a drapers shop, for the owner

Now that Newcastle Central Library has just reopened in larger building with much more shelf space, I have had opportunities to browse several Trade Directories. e.g. 1778,1790, several in the 1798-1805 era, 1824 and 1838.

Although plenty of draper listings none for John Newton. Several Newtons but not drapers.

Thanks for your help Michael  Smiley nice to know I wasn't missing something obvious. I guess # 2 must be the only remaining option.

I'm now waiting for the Durham Wills website to launch so that I can have a look for him and any other elusive Newtons I can turn up.
