The birth of James Carmichael  a clerk in the Tax office, Edinburghis in doubt. His burial in 1850 record suggests a birth date of 1764 whereas the 1841 Census (using rounded ages) suggests 1781 to 1786.
No evidence has been found of his parents, but the following pointers have been identified:
1. , James Carmichael is quoted as a Merchant on marriage to Jean Home, 1798.
2. A (lady) Helen Carmichael married (sir) Andrew Halliday who worked as a Doctor working with maternity.
3. Andrew Halliday's parents were Thomas Halliday and Margaret Porteous.
4. Helen Carmichael's father was probably Peter Carmichael a Merchant in Edinburgh and her mother Catherine Plenderlieth.
5. Grace Carmichael a sister of Helen married reverend Alexander Porteous.
6. James named his children:
James halliday Carmichael, his son Andrew wood Carmichael became a church reverend.
Andrew Halliday Carmichael, he became a Doctor working in maternity.
    Helen Carmichael.
    Alexander Porteous Carmichael.
There are many coincidental uses of names and this may indicate close family relationships.
Could James , Helen and Grace be brothers and sisters?
Can you help to resolve this conundrum.
Brian.
