Hi Mel,

Was Eric born in 1908? He seems to be on the 1911 census in Workington with Hugh age 37 (apparently born Workington) and Adelaide age 43.

FreeBMD has a marriage in Mar 1911
Hugh McMillan - Adelaide Sowerby so maybe it's a second marriage for Hugh ...

There's an earlier marriage for a Hugh McMillan in Cockermouth 1907, to either Martha Taylor or Elizabeth Wallace, and a Martha McMillan dies age 33 in Jun 1908, Cockermouth = possibly giving birth to Eric? Undecided

If the Workington birth place turns out to be correct then the nearest match I can find in 1881 is this boy:

The original image does look like McMillan to me.

I was expecting to find dozens of possible Martha Taylors. Well, there are dozens but I can only see one of the right age in Cockermouth district, so I thought I'd post her as a possible candidate:

1901
RG13/4883 89 2
Workington, Cumberland
41 Pow Street

William Tyson Taylor, head, wid, 71, Shoemaker, own account, at home, b. Workington
Martha Taylor, niece, 26, Confectioner, b. Lancashire Liverpool

She's already in the same household in 1891:
RG12/4304 107 3
Workington, Cumberland
39 & 41 Pow St

William T Taylor, head, 61, Shoemaker, b. Workington
Elizabeth, wife, 60, b. Cockermouth
Eleanor Bell, niece, s, 26, b. Workington
Martha Taylor, niece, s, 16, b. Lancashire Liverpool

Now trying to trace her back to 1881 is tougher but I quite like this girl:

RG11/3708 17 26

Dad was born Cockermouth, and tracing William Tyson Taylor back through the censuses, it seems he had a brother John born ca. 1842
