William Amos & the Spain Family
« on: Monday 14 September 09 13:33 UTC (UK) »

Hi

My gt grandfather, William Joseph Henry Amos (born 1883 Ashford) is to be found in the 1891 Canterbury, St Lawrence census and is referred to as a "nephew".  I also see that Mary Spain is actually shown written on the census as "Amos" not Spain.

I am aware from my mother that the Amos family have connections with the Spain family as she can remember the Spains from her childhood.

My confusion is how the Amos family are actually related to the Spain family.

I have read through the postings here regarding the Spain family and would be grateful to hear from anyone who may be able to assist me further please.

Thank you

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Do you have a copy of William's birth cert showing his parents names?

Births September qtr 1883
William Joseph H Amos   W Ashford  2a 749

The Mary Amos you refer to is shown as the daughter of William & Mary Spain so if William was her son - he should be shown as grandson

I have tracked William and wife Mary back to the 1861 census and they do have a daughter Mary but there is no Mary Spain/Amos marriage

Her parents married in 1854 but Mary snr was not an Amos

Hi

Thanks for your quick reponse.

This is SO confusing!! I can't seem to get my head around it all today, sadly.

I will apply for William's birth cert today as I keep meaning to.

I take your point about the fact that William Amos woud be shown as grandson to William Spain if it were Mary Spain's son.

I wonder whether William Amos is in fact Mary Spain's nephew?

I seem to remember as posting earlier this year which came up with Mary Spain marrying George Barrow who subsequently died and she therefore would have married in her widowed name of Barrow.  I believe she married

Mar qtr 1883, West Ashford, 2a 935
AKHURST Emma
AMOS John Henry
BARROW Mary Ann
BRAND Thomas

I am sorry for the confusion but do hope someone can help me unravel it all.

Hello.

My ggggg grandfather was John Spain, and your Mary Ann was the grand-daughter of his brother Stephen.

She married labourer George Barrow in Frindsbury 12/11/1874.

I believe she was then widowed, and married John Henry Amos in west ashford j/f/m 1883,as Mary Ann Barrow.

Her parents were William Spain and Mary Ann Streeting.

Ive done quite extensive research on my Spains and have a lot of info which id be happy to share.

Id also be very intrested in the Amoses as i have nothing on John.

Most of my info is on Genes Reunited.Do you belomg to that?

Hope to hear from you soon, regards, nel.
