Herne Bay Watchmaker
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 18:16 UTC (UK) »

Has anyone an interest in a Louis Morgan who was a watchmaker in Ramsgate in 1911  and later in Herne Bay?

Hi I knew Louis Morgan (Herne Bay) he was my grandfather. His children were Jane (as we called her) and Peter. Do you have a connection?  Chris

Hi Chris,
Louis Ernest Morgan married Thrasilla Rhoda Agatha Ellis in 1908 somewhere in Thanet, Kent. In 1911 they were living at 22, King St., Ramsgate. She was a younger sister of my grandfather. Do you have details of the marriage - perhaps a certificate? A connection looks likely.

Hi Toby,

Great to hear from you I know so little about that side of family.

There is one factor that has thrown my research out being that it seems my father was adopted by Louis Ernest Morgan after my real granparents dies in a car crash when he was a baby (this is what my father told us) and he did not know until he joined the RAF and saw his birth certificate. Our name is Morgan-Locke on all the paperwork although my father as a child was bought up Morgan. It seem my father was related to Louis Morgan as that is how they came to adopt him but we later found out there was another side of the family which they did not tell us about.

Apparently there was a red haired lady who tried to may contact with my dad but Louis did not encourage it but we do not know why.

My relatives in Canada have done quite a bit familly tree which they have just sent me which I can send you if you let me have my email address. (mine is email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange personal email addresses - thankyou)

I remember Louis and Rhoda when I was child as used to visit their house in Mortimer Street Herne Bay and I rememember my Aunt Jane (as we called her) who used to take me out a lot when I was a child - she had a tragic life. I have her photo and a pic of Grandfather with his car and my sister.

Any more info you have would be interesting

Regards

Chris

I do not have my grandfathers wedding or birth cert but now can make sime more enquires as I have this new info.

Hi Chris,
All very interesting. Have you got a photograph of Rhoda? As I have often said, I would give quite a lot to have 10 minutes with my grandfather. When I knew him I did not have the current interest.

I see we are not allowed to swap email addresses through Rootschat but it is interesting to hear a bit about family whatever the connection is.

I think someone in my family has a photo or two of Rhoda as I remember seeing them - when my father died we divided up the photos and I got one of Louis whith his car and my sister and one of my Aunt Jane Morgan so I guess one of my sisters in Canada got the ones of Grandma.

My parent moved to Canada about 30 years ago as did both my sisters so I am the only one left in UK (plus my children).

One of my christian names is Louis named after Louis Morgan.
I can remember Rhoda but I was very young - I remember she was very serious/strict. Louis was amiable liked to smoke and had a glass of whiskey each day. He had a housekeeper until he died and a dog.

I will see if I can get a scan of photo of Rhoda and email it to you although not sure how through rootchat.

Have you been to Herne Bay and seen the plaque on the seafront with Louis Morgan's name on?

Chris

Hi Chris

If you click on somebody's name (to the left of any of their posts) it will take you to their profile where you have the option to send them a personal message.  This way you can talk about living persons/exchange email addresses in private etc. etc..

How might one find out more about a fatal car crash somewhere in Europe in c.1920. A local newspaper  might help but there must surely be some legal details somewhere.  Any ideas anyone?

Hi,

This is the only info I have:

Name: Percy Arthur (I think is Arthur but not 100% clear)  Locke

Occupation: Manager of Electric Theatre

Wife: Selena Maud Lillian Locke (formerly Watson)

Address on 11 March 1920: 20 Oakley, Street Herne Bay
(registration district: Blean sub-district: Herne)

Son: Percy Montague Thomas Locke

This is all I have which is from my fathers birth certificate.

I cannot find his date and place of birth and also where is death was registered. We were told he died 1920 with his
wife in a car crash in Europe but we have no proof of this.

Many thanks Chris

I would have thought that the violent death of a cinema manager overseas would have made the local press. Does anyone know what newspaper would have circulated in Herne Bay?

There is a marriage for a Selina M L WATSON to Albert E HARDING in the Chatham district September quarter 1945 ref. 2a 4045 which may or may not be relevant.  The Chatham registration district covered the following parishes http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/chatham.html

If it was a C of E church marriage you may find it in the online parish registers http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

A kind lady Lizzielogs has just advised me :-

"I don't think you will have a lot of luck with the Isle of Thanet Gazette. The Isle of Thanet is only actually Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs.
See the following:-
In the Herne Bay area there are four local weekly newspapers: the paid-for Herne Bay Gazette and Herne Bay Times, providing news related only to the town, and the free KM Extra and Canterbury Adscene, providing news on the wider Canterbury district area. The KM Group owns Herne Bay Gazette and KM Extra.  KM in this instance means 'Kent Messenger'
Regards Lizzielogs."
Back to the drawing-board.
