Frongoch Internment Camp
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 18:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone

I wasn't sure which was the best place to post this question but  I'll try here first!

I wonder if anyone knows exactly when the Frongoch Internment Camp closed? I have found on the web that it was Dec 1916 but I wondered if anyone knows the exact date in December? The reason I ask is that I have an ancestor's war records and it states that he served in the Royal Defence Corps. I looked up the places he was based and see that he was at Knockaloe (presumably the internment camp on IOM), Douglas (same) and at Frongoch between 14/12/16 & 17/1/17. As Michael Collins and other Irish POW's from the Easter uprising were held there in 1916 I just wondered if my ancestor was there when the camp was still inhabited or whether he arrived after its closure on general clearing up duties.

Many thanks!

I've now found out from further Googling that the last of the Irish prisoners left the camp on 23 Dec 1916, but if anyone has any further info on the camp or the Royal Defence Corps' involvement there, I would be most grateful!

Hi There,

Is there a list anywhere of the internees? My Dad told me that my Grandfather William Byrne was interned in Wales after the Easter uprising and I wondered if this was where he was interned.

TIA
