Hi Kirsty,

Have you found them in 1911 yet, to identify John's birth place and from there, try to trace him back?

In Bristol district, there seems to be a John Fraser / Blanche A / Norah Mary Fraser household.

Unfortunately the details are pay to view www.1911census.co.uk

Kirsty, you will have to work back from each generation.  What does the marriage cert say and then trace it via the Census to make sure you have the correct family and so on.  There is no easy way I'm afraid.  I can see a Henry Fraser with a son John on the 1881 Census, but he is born in London  in 1825.
If you trace back and get John's birth cert with his parents names then it should lead you to Henry.

Hello

The 1911 census indicates that John Fraser was a Commercial Traveller born in 1879/80 at Low Broughton, Salford.

There is no birth registration for a John Fraser in Salford in those years. There is, however, a birth registration for a Frederick Frieser.

On the 1881 census he is shown as Frederick J Frieser aged 1 son of Herman (or Hyman) Frieser.

On the 1891 census he is listed as Jacob Fraser and on the 1901 census he is not living with his parents Herman and Cecilia but his two siblings Louis and Eleanor Frieser are still at home. Herman is a Commercial Traveller.

I cannot see any sign of Frederick or Jacob Frieser after 1891 but in 1901 a John Fraser of the correct age appears in lodgings at census reference Salford RG13/3714 Folio 118 Page 21. He is a Commercial Clerk.

I wonder if there is a large grain of truth in the allegation made by great auntie but that it might actually have been John Fraser himself who changed his name from Frederick Jacob Frieser and that it was he also who decided to say that his father, Herman/Hyman, was called Henry.

Tracing Herman/Hyman back in the censuses he was born in Manchester but his parents, Morris and Miriam were from Cracow.

What do you think ?

On the 1911 census, his parents Hyman and Cecilia and his siblings Louis and Eleanor are all still living together in Salford and they are listed as Fraser.

Hello

Here are some relevant census entries, in case it is the correct family and in case you do not have access to them ....

1861

Manchester RG9/2949 Folio 57 Page 6

Morris Frieser Head M 31 Tassell Manufacturer Austria Cracow
Miriam do Wife M 32 Austria Cracow
Hyman do Son 5 Scholar Lancashire Manchester
Bluma do Daur 3 Lancashire Manchester

22 Johnson St, Manchester

I think that Cracow (or Krakow) was classed as a part of Austria from about 1795 until 1918, when Poland regained independence.
