Hi there I am wonder if some one can help me.
I am having to write a letter to the Registrar in the Civil Secton of the High Court in Auckland to gain access to my late father and his first wife's divorce record. The marriage was dissolved on 27 July 1956.
I am wondering if some one can help me in writing what to say in the letter.
I know what one of the main reasons for the divorce was but will not go into it on here. I know that after the divorce my step mother married my uncle. Very complicated indeed. What reasons should i give in order to gain acess.
Any help would be welcomed
Thanks

Newbe, Don't give a reason unless you are asked specifically. If the file is available for public access there's no need.. and I always follow the rule that the least said to bureaucrats the better!
John B says he just made the request... why not do the same then take it from there?

Thanks to the both of you for your advice.
I shall just write the letter asking for access and see where it goes from there.
I have the reference from Auckland Archives as they emailed it to me.
If I had to wait for the 60 years rule I would be waiting until 2016/2017

Ps: will let you know how I get on

I have experience of the process of applying for access to restricted files ... I'm happy to give you some "pointers", should you require same.

Hi Lu,
Would love some pointers please.
The Decree Absolute date is as in my first post 27 July 1956. As i said this is my late father and his first wife's divorce record that I would like to see. My mother was his second wife and that too ended in divorce.
Thanks Newbe

Hi Newbe
[I'll get in touch with you via PM later today.]
Just in the meantime, can you advise, if Auckland Archives (when they responded to your email for the file number), gave any further information regarding the fact that the file was restricted and Court permission was needed for access. ??
Just curious. (I seem to recall that I received some printed information regarding the application process.)

This is their reply
I've carried out a quick check of our indexes for you; the Divorce number for Arthur Roland and Elsie Mary Patricia Smith is D655/55. For written permission to have access to this record please write to the Registrar at the High Court Auckland.
Then they put address down below which I have not included here.
Yes both are deceased.

Hi Everyone,
I got my late father's divorce file in the post yeaterday from his first wife.
No names of children as they had none together but it does mention two children they had but never adopted. The first was born in 1942 to a american soldier and died 1963 the other was born abt 1948/49 and is still living.

That's good news Newbe.
[Yes, it's a bit of lengthy process applying for these restricted files - and "jumping through all the hoops" required ... but no doubt, worthwhile in the end.]

It was worth it alright
Even had the marriage cert in it
Now that is one I can cross of the list of restricted ones that I have not made up yet
Elsie went on to marry my Uncle Frank (died 1981) some time after the divorce in 1956. So some time after 27 July 1956. Might need to get that marriage printout to find out the date.
Extra work to get these restricted ones now but worth the work when I can do it.
