Infant deaths 1841/2 Bishop Auckland
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 08:53 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone please explain why there would seem to be a large number of infant deaths in the vacinity of Bishop Auckland during 1841/2 ?
My connection left with his family for New York shortly after but came on to Australia some years later.

I think there were large numbers of infant deaths everywhere at that time.  In my own family I have four out of the five children of one couple dying then.   Twins who both had diarrhoea and died at 6 months, another boy from "inflammation" at 17 months, and their only daughter from whooping cough age 3.  Every ailment that we would consider minor nowadays was a major threat for them.

Thank you sillgen
I have been looking through Bishop's Transcripts (Auckland St Andrew) today and could not help notice that a lot of burials were for infants.
My connection look to have lost a child born c1836,still alive 1841 Census Newgate St (Margaret Langstaff) but did not make it to New York (missing 1850 Census New York.)

You could try searching the deaths on www.freebmd.org.uk to see if the name pops up.   At that time there is no indication of age but it might give you a date to search the burial registers of the parish.  On the other hand a child of that age may have already been working and not want to go to New York or stayed with relatives so it might be worth searching the 1851 census here.

Thank you sill
I have discovered Margaret Longstaff arrived with her family New York from Liverpool on "Oxford" 23 Sep 1842,her age 6 years which is consistant with her age of 4 at the 1841 Census Newgate St Bishop Auckland.
However she was missing from 1850 Census Castleton,Richmond,New York.
Also she was not with the family when they arrived Melbourne on "Nebraska" March 1853.
Looks like she either died in America or remained there.
