Hi Charlotte,
I have been given that he was in Bristol 26th August 1896 and am not sure if it is a birth date?

Hi Annette, Why not check out that that is his birth year by looking in freebmd?

Annette,

If the date is in doubt, the birthplace might be too!

Looks like you need a subscription to Ancestry so that you can find more definitive data as are found in censuses.  Freebmd gives so many possibles between 1850 and 1880 that the Ancestry option would be cheaper than obtaining b-certs.

Hiya Annette,

What info are you looking for? Census records etc or are you trying to trace them forwards instead of back?

There's a family on the 1881 census that looks right, John & Lavinia with two daughters, Mary b. 1878 and Beatrice b. 1879.

I can't see anything obvious in 1891 and 1901 but if that is what you're intersted in I can have a more detailed look. I have a lot of Nash families from Bristol in my tree and have found that the name seems to be frequently mistranscribed, Wash, Mash etc  Roll Eyes

Also, can I just ask what source your info comes from?

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your reply. Tracing the Nash family back.

From what I have been told she cannot get birth records for Thomas, but I am waiting for her to ring so I can help her join " rootschat." Embarrassed
I am helping out a friend and I have suggested that she join up to get the help that I have had with roootschat, but in the meantime I am helping her out.

Cheers

Annette, Anc***ry subs can be pretty expensive- and alternative is to ask around local public libraries to see which has ances**y avaiable online for patrons to use.
It's not as convenient as having the sub but a jolly lot cheaper Grin

Hi Annette,
I cannot find your Thomas but this appears to be the family

Marriages Sep 1875
FOWLER  Lavinia Adelaide     Bristol  6a 3
NASH  John     Bristol  6a 3

This is the only marriage I can see at this stage for Nash/Smith

Marriages Dec 1912

Nash  George W      London C.  1c 22
Smith  Florence V A   London C.  1c 22

The 1881 census you mentioned would appear to be John and Lavinia where
John is a civil servant born 1855 Pembroke Wales
Lavinia born 1860 Bristol
Mary L  1878 Bristol
Beatrice M b 1879 Bristol
RG11; Piece: 2500; Folio: 32; Page: 3

This looks like the family in 1901 but no Thomas
1901 9 Hillside Cottage Bristol
RG13; Piece: 2386; Folio: 135; Page: 18
John Nash 47  b Pembroke  Government pensioner
Lavina A Nash 47  1854 Bristol
Mary Louisa Nash 23  Bristol
Margaret F Nash 18     do  Cardboard box maker
George F Nash 16  do Packer in tea warehouse
Mabel E Nash 4  Bristol
Annie C Nash 13 Bristol
James A Nash 12  Bristol
William E Nash 11  Bristol
Leonard F Nash 8  Bristol
Bernard R Nash 3  Bristol
Harold P Nash 2  Brislington, Somerset
Will see if I can find anything else
