Cole family in Chichester - please help
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 11:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I hope it's OK to ask for some help here. I don't know a great deal about my Grandfather/Grandmother's family on my dad's side, and I think he was adopted so this may complicate things.

So, any help with family details or hints would be much appreciated. What I know is:

Gordon Cole, b. 1905, d.1984 (my grandfather), and married to Ella Kate Hall who was born in 1907. They were married in 1932 and registered at Westhampnett. From when I was born until they died they lived in Chichester.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Jon.

being born just after the 1901 census and not knowing Gordon's parents means you should:-

o Get his 1932 Marriage Cert to provide his (stated) fathers name

and/or

o Check the 1911 census to see who he was with - he does show up on the Free Index, born c1905 in the Chichester District. You need to plug his name into the 'others present in Household' boxes (leaving the main search Name fields blank) to show who else was in the enumerated household.

as there doesnt seem to be a Birth Index entry for Gordon - in Sussex or nearby - and we know from the Marriage Index his middle initial was J, I wonder if this Alice Cole fostered children .... as were the Keates in 1901 (they stayed with her until at least 1911))

.... and in Gordon's case gave him their name ?

You need to get the full Census documents from the 1911 to see what other info is provided for Gordon.

dont take this for gospel (altho it is the only marriage of a Burchett to an Emma in the right period) - but no sign of a Leicestershire-born Emma Joyce in 1851 so far

Hi (especially to PastMaster!),

Thank you so much for such a quick and helpful response, I'm genuinely blown away by the level of help. I'll take a look at everything and see how it fits with what I've got and also look into the birth certificate.

If anyone can help with Ella Kate Hall's family (my grandmother) who married Gordon Cole that would be great too. I know she had a sister Florence and a sister Margaret but beyond that I know very little.

Thanks again.

Hallo again Jon,

You can take the exact same approach with Ella Kate - luckily both her names apppear in the 1911 Census Free Index, and using the free index search features we can see that she had an older sister Florence Emily born c1905.

As I am not allowed to transcribe what I see in the 1911, heres the marriage of her parents:-

Marriages Dec 1902

even tho I have his YoB from the census, I cant see Thomas Walter Hall in the area in 1901 - it may well be that he stayed in Chichester after marriage - probably need the full detail from the 1911 (PoB, occupation, etc) and/or the Marriage Cert.

Altho its good odds this is him, and he's either mistranscribed or not in the area in 1901 ..

Well, the previous generation Halls certainly moved around - altho 1871 doesnt throw any light on the 'occupation' shown in the 1881 census ...

1871 - RG10/1118; Folio: 95; Page: 29 - Chichester, St Pancras
St Pancras Street

Richard Hall 43  Head Baker Sussex, Brighton
Ellen Hall 30  Wife Chichester
Edward Hall 18  son Baker Shoreham
Mourice Hall 14  son Baker do
Caroline Hall 12  dau CI, Jersey
William Hall 10  son Hants, Landport
Richard Hall 7  son Hants, Southsea
Annie Hall 3  dau Chichester
Ellen Hall 18 months  Chichester
George Hall 6 months  Chichester

maybe a Military man previously - given the kids PoBs?

and it looks from the kids ages that Ellen is a 2nd wife ?
