Please could you answer two questions for me?

When did the first census start in America?
And what are PA and IL an abreviation of, as these two were given as places of birth for an ancestor of mine.

PA = Pennsylvania
Il = Illinois

Census started different years depending on each state. Some states also had their own State Census
