suspect email.
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 17:48 UTC (UK) »

Today I have received an email from some -one who says they have been researching education

in the 19th century..
and are about to have this report published .

They go on to say that they have researched my Great grandfather who was a school master then   ..and gleaned  info from myself due to some of my postings on the net..

Would I like to see these papers..

I am always on the alert where emails from addresses that are unknown to me, so  I am  rather suspicious as to the genuinity of this letter.

Any advice to offer would be appreciated
The addy of the mail is @google   Dolly

Hi Dolly

Have you posted your email address on the internet?

It might just  be a coincidence if not.

Has this person identified themselves, or asked you to click on a link or told you what their interest is?  Have you replied?

You're usually right to be cautious, which is why Moderators on Rootschat advise against posting email addresses, and remove them where we find them.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Have you tried doing a websearch on their e-mail address?  I often do that with suspicious e-mails.  Out the whole address in " .." .  You may get lots if hits showing it is a genuine researcher..

 Hi,  re your questions.

I have not posted my email on the net, apart from such sites as Roots, and as the  email did not

come via any of my regular sites , they must have got my addy some where, easy done I'd think!

The person did give a name, but no other details except from those I posted.

They also gave my Gt Grandfathers full name and the area that he taught in...but I did give a lot of info  on this site particularly , during my searches for him.

I would like to think that this is all genuine, as  the report is about to be published ,but by whom or for what if any authority et'c.. I wonder?

If I myself were to write to someone in this style, then I'd give as much info about myself to assure the person that I was legit!

Milly.I have never done a websearch . might try it, Thanks ...

I have not replied to this email  Thanks to you both, Dolly

If you mean Rootschat - that was a mistake!

This is a very friendly site and I am sure most people who visit us are well-intentioned, but it is part of the internet and open to all, so you shouln't post personal details on the boards.

You can't tell where this person got your information, so it could be that they saw it where you thought it safe to post - but you can't tell their intentions.  If they want you badly enough, they will try contacting you again, maybe with more info this time.

I hope it works out happily for you.

Hi Dolly
The general rule, I believe, is that if you have any doubts whatsoever regarding the source, then treat such emails with suspicion and delete.  As Arranroots says, if they want to contact you enough, they will get in touch another way and ensure that you are comfortable with their identity.  The main thing is that if you are not comfortable with the source, do not respond, and delete their post.

Once you have done that, you won't have to worry about it any more.

Regards,
Greensleeves

Arranroots, so sorry to have mislead you, but I did not mean that I have ever posted my addy on

any sites ,
I only ever give my addy when first registering on any sites that require such..

that is why I wondered just where they got it from, but of course I realise that that is quite easy to suss anyway..

I fully understand that any info I do post will be read by all and sundrae, hence my hesitation to reply to this mail..  I'm sure if this person is genuine that they might get back in touch, so I shall play wait & see for now...  Thank's to all... much obliged Dolly

Ah, OK - I understand you now!

I hope that the person concerned is genuine and gets back in touch properly, as it sounds interesting - but not worth the risk til you know more.

Good luck!

Well, genuine or not - they've sent you an email that is relevant to you specifically so they must have known your email address somehow. After receiving odd emails, I do a google search on my own email address to see if it's on a website anywhere.

Be aware with hotmail, you need to keep using the account.

If it becomes inactive all history will be lost when you reactive the account
