Book/s: Victoria County History Vol 4
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 10:33 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know where I could obtain a copy of the Victoria County History for Herts - specifically Volume 4: Edwinstree Hundred. Would prefer a (freebie) online copy if possible  Grin

All the other Hundreds are on BritishHistory Online but they don't have this volume and don't expect it anytime soon.

According to VCH website, Volume 4 includes the following:
Albury, Anstey, Aspenden {alias Aspeden with Wakeley}, Barkway, Barley, Buckland, Little Hadham, Much Hadham, Great Hormead, Little Hormead, Layston, Meesden, Brent Pelham, Furneux Pelham, Stocking Pelham, Throcking, Wyddial

Thanks

Di

Have you tried the library?

I looked for it in Google Books but it didn't seem to be there. There might be other items of interest there, though.

Thanks for your suggestion Charlie

I've been trying Libraries in Australia but not having a lot of success so far but will keep looking.

Hello Di

It's in the Auckland Central Library under"The Victoria History of the County of Hertford", edited by William Page. Is that the one you're after?

But you're across the ditch so this information isn't much use to you. Anything specific in that book you're after?

Charlie.

Oh well done Charlie - I wonder if Auckland Library will do an inter-library loan with Oz  Grin

I can only assume that it the same set of books. It's usually called "VCH Herts" when quoted as a source - but the name William Page certainly rings a bell.

I'm mainly looking for the section on Layston/Buntingford. I think it's in Volume 4 under Edwinstree Hundred but I may have the volume number wrong.

I'd love to read the rest of the Edwinstree section but the Layston bit would be a fantastic bonus.

Thanks

Di
