Aaron Wood - Cheddleton?
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 21:37 UTC (UK) »

Aaron Wood was my 7 x g.grandfather.  For the last 30+ years of his life he was a Presbyterian minister in Etal, parish of Ford in rural Northumberland.  The earliest record I have is the birth of his oldest child in 1697 (though he could have been in the area before that).  He died in 1731.  The question is - where was he before that?

The History of Northumberland Volume 11 states that he was a native of Staffordshire.

I also found, handwritten in an old bound transcription of Ford parish records this -

“From the records office in the County of Stafford – Aaron Wood M.A. of Etal was the son of William Wood of Rownall in the parish of Cheddleton in the county of Stafford.  A letter dated 1706 in Stafford records office mentions A. Wood Snr., clerk of Eathall in the parish of Ford, Northumberland and sons William, 7, Aaron, 5 and Isaac, 3.”

There is no mention of his daughter who would have been 9.  1706 is the year his wife died which could be relevant.

I did contact Stafford RO about the letter but they have no individual record of it and would need to know which collection it is in to investigate further

I know that Cheddleton church records do not go back far enough to be able to locate a baptism for this man and he could well have been born into a dissenting family anyway.  However NBI have a long list of Woods buried in Cheddleton, among them Aaron Wood who died in 1743.

Can anyone think of something else I can do to find out more?

Thanks for that, Willow.

I've had a quick look and unfortunately their biographies only start in 1843 but they do have some civil war documents so they may have some for the period just after that.  The trouble is that they were seriously persecuted at this time and moved around a lot so maybe records haven't survived.

I know that he went to Franklands Academy but don't know when.  There is a lot of info about this place but I am still looking for any reference to Aaron.

I sent an email to Dr. Williams Library a few years ago - still waiting for a reply but I've been back on their site lately and followed a link to the Surnam project.  Alas I have more data than they do and when I've firmed up a few references I will pass on to them what I have.

I think my main concern now is that the Aaron Wood who was buried Cheddleton 1743 could be the one whose father was William and therefore not the man I'm looking for.  It's a bit confusing as I also found an unofficial  reference which said he was born in Lancashire, father James  Huh but I'm sticking with the official version for now!
