My brother and I visited carndonagh this week to find my grandparents farm - next to a farm owned by 'sandy mclelland' which has since been bought by 'robert smith'. We also visited st patricks church at aughaclay malin, and think we have found our grandparents grave (my father James Alphonsus Mclaughlin moved to england round about 1940/1941/1942).
we found the headstone, complete with photograph! which reads as follows:-
James Mclaughlin (Billy)
(Drumaville)
died 15th october 1947
wife Elizabeth died 1st june 1958
the priest wasn't there so we couldn't ask any questions.
we didn't get far initially because we didn't know our nickname, which an old man thinks was the 'charley johns' - cousins of the 'charley daniels'.
this is the first time we've tried this and want to take it as far as we can go - which isn't very far at the moment. although we've tried many web-sites we haven't had much joy, and are stuck
Incidentally, when we saw the grave, there were the remains of flowers (dead but not 50 years old) so there may even be living relatives in the area.
is there anybody who knows anything about our ancestors/relatives or can tell us the best way to proceed - backwards and forwards? Many thanks

 Hello there, I to am a McLaughlin from Drumaville and have grandparents buried in the very same church, I was informed from the church that they do not hold any records. Our family name was the Packa paddies Our grandfather was Patrick and grandmother Sarah Doherty. When I visited Ireland as a child nearly everyone in Malin and surrounding areas were a McLaughlin and a relative of some sort so I should think some where down the line we have a connection.
I am also struggling to find info and where to get it from, I did find the link on this site for the Donegal census of 1911 very usefull and found both sets of grandparent on it but could not go back further as it seems the earlier census is not completed, but hope to visit Ireland and Letterkenny where I believe I should be able to access some info.
I do know some of my relatives went to Amercia, my grandmother went and came back a stayed in Ireland so I if this is the case for you it may be worth looking at the shipping lists. But I have to say the help I have recieved so far from this site and it's members has been wonderful.
Good luck and keep me informed on how you get on . If I find a link I will let you know.

By the way, my brother told me to attach the coat of arms, but I didn't realise it was half the size of a football pitch!

Hello,
I too descend from the McLaughlins from Malin Donegal.Their nickname was White Paddy.
The Charlestown section of Boston (only one square mile) consisted of a vast majority of Donegal natives.Brookline,Ma was/is a wealthy suburb of Boston,many Irish first lived here working on the estates .Often when a young couple married they would settle in Charlestown to begin their life.
Many Charlestown Irish as they did better would move to the suburbs/areas north of Boston.
(Medford,Stoneham,Wilmington,ect.)
In the 1930's Medford was begining to become the Italian enclave that is today.Many Irish Americans moved further north to Reading ,Ma and Andover,Ma.
Andover once a farming community-middle class has in recent decades become a wealthy place to live.Middle class(Grand Children of the Irish have now moved to southern New Hampshire (Windham,Derry,).I am just trying to give Gracelands some clues as to where her American relations might be!!!Let me know if I can help.

I haven't been able to trace my family enough yet to know if any were likely to have emigrated to America, but if/when I do, I will certainly take advantage of your generous offer.

Thanks for your reply,My Great-Grandfather was Patrick Doherty of Francistown Balleegan Malin,Donegal.His Mother was a "White Paddy" Mclaughlin.I think the Dohertys were Dans or Dennys-
A little mixed up on that line.Patrick Doherty's wife was a Catherine McGonagle from Malintown.
In 1920 this part of my family was living in Charlestown,MA.,IN 1930 they were in Medford Ma.
My money is on if they(our families) were not cousins,they mosy likely knew each other.
