Hi Superfly,
Have you got a copy of his death certificate? ( FreeBMD, Q1 1845, Midhurst RD 7 323) It might give you a few clues.  Perhaps a parent or close relative was the informant which would help to identify him.  Have you found him in the 1841 census?  Although it will only tell you if he was born in Sussex or not rather than where, that might help.  Do you know if there was any marriage?  Being a common name you need to gather as much information as you can in order to make a positive identification  Smiley

Hi Jane

No I have not got a death certificate but I have taken your advice and have ordered one. I have looked in the 1841 census with no luck and have looked in the IGI for a marriage but nothing fits at the moment but hopefully the death certificate will shed some light.

Again many thanks

To die at such a young age might mean that it was an accident or something that might warrant an inquest or a newspaper article which would give you another line of enquiry.  Also, knowing the place of his death you might be able to ascertain where he was buried & an MI might exist or at least a transcription housed at the Records Office.
All sorts of possibilities  Smiley

Hi Jane

I have received the death certificate and guess what it turns out that it was John's G/fathers death certificate aged 87 so I think  my record of his age being 27 is wrong.I have also found out that John c1828 was in the Royal Navy and married in 1867 to Jane Ashman of Lyminge Kent. The 1881 census states they where living in Woolston, Southampton Hants with two children.

Once again many thanks for your assistance.
