Good luck with your searching in Wales, Omega!

I had a reply this morning from Hastings Cem and Crem, unfortunately they couldn't find any record of the baby.  Here's the correspondence, in case it can help anyone else:

I asked:
"My grandmother (Margaret Rangecroft, nee Horton, who was born in Guesling) tells me that my great-great aunt, Alice Milton Barnes (born in Brede in the second quarter of 1889, baptised there on 28 Jul 1889), was living in Hastings in the mid to late 1930's when she had a child, probably a boy, at St Helen's Hospital, Hastings.  The child died at birth, or soon afterwards. I believe Alice was not married.  I am trying to locate any records of the child's name, birth and death, and also Alice's death which I belive occurred not too long after the child's.  Is it possible they would have been buried at your cemetery?

Alice's parents were Mark Barnes (born 1853 in Brede, died in 1904 in Rye) and Harriett Masters (born 1853 in Udimore, died in 1894 in Rye).  Her siblings were Agnes Elizabeth (born 1878 in Udimore, I don't have a record of death), Jane Harriett (born 1881 in Udimore, died 1968), Charles William (abt 1881, in Udimore, I don't have a record of death) and Louisa (I'm not sure of Louisa's date of birth, but I believe she died when she was only about six)."

And the reply was:

"Unfortunately I am unable to help you with the child of Alice Barnes, I have looked from 1930 to 1940.

As regards to the other persons named I have not looked through our books as I would believe that as they died in Rye and Udimore they would probably have been buried in those parishes.

You may find that the Hastings and Rother Family History Society have information on these Parishes. Details can be found on the internet.

In any event all of our records are in date of death order, should we have to do a full search there is a fee of £22 per name."

So there you have it, I think we may never know!
