FLOCKHART, William
« on: Monday 22 June 09 00:05 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for anything to do with the Flockhart family, but am still at the "starting" stage.
My son-in-law is a Flockhart, hence so are my daughter and two grandsons.
My son-in-law is Flockhart b. 1961 Australia.
His father was William Flockhart b. 1919 Edinburgh who married Evelyn Joyce James b. 1922 Suffolk. They had one son and a daughter, born in the UK app.b.1943. Then migrated to Australia.
He served in the Royal Scots Fusillers from approx. 1938 - 1946/7.
If anyone has any information on this family, or has an idea where to look for them, I would appreciate it greatly.
Many thanks,
Eddo

Hi Eddo

You might want to modify this post a bit.....  it's not a good idea to use details... names etc... of people who are living.

Hi Eddo

Any reason you've posted this topic in Fife board?

You will need to start with the marriage of William and Evelyn to establish the name of William's father (if the marriage was in England) or of both his parents (if the marriage was in Scotland) Or, if the couple are now deceased,  the Australian death records  to see what it may say about parents.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Do you have any idea where they may have married? Or where the first son (without naming him) was born?

Between 1918 and 1920, there are 5 births in Scotland of a William FLOCKHART.
Two of these are in Midlothian. Both of those are in 1919. Edinburgh can have many sub-parishes, so you would need to pay to view the entries to see which parish.

This topic
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=388263.new#new

states the full dob for William.

If worse come to worse, (though I  recommend going the marriage or death cert route first) you could take a punt that one of the two 1919 Midlothian is him - and you might have to ulitimately download both of them to see if either has a matching dob.

This site
http://www.namessite.com.au/names/William-FLOCKHART.html
Has an entry for William FLOCKHART - NSW - event dated 1983
It also has (via search) an event dated 2003 for the correct name of the wife.

Are these the years and place, in which the couple passed away?

On two other messages you mention, William had a sister  who has recently died?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,207800.msg2589350.html#msg2589350
Where did she die and who was she married too - this is another possible way of finding out about William and their parents.

You also mentioned in one post, unless I've read it wrong, that William's grandfather was also named William?

FMP Passenger lists show:\ heading out of London, bound for Brisbane in 1953:
http://www.findmypast.com
Evelyn J FLOCKHART b abt 1923
William FLOCKHART b abt 1919
and two children b 1943 and 1948 (whose names I won't mention here for privacy)

You can register and search this on FMP for free - but to see the full record and manifest, you'd need to buy credits.

I would just like to say a very big "Thank You" to all the people who have responded to my listing.
Lots of good advice and lots of good starting points and leads.
Don't know what I would have done without all of you.
Again, THANK YOU

Hi Karenlee,
Thanks for the advice. I hadn't even thought about that. You can tell I'm really a beginner. Have altered the posting as you advised. Again thanks for the response.

You're welcome Eddo

(I edited my previous post as I wrote the wrong bride surname for William on the marriage reference -  his entry gives bride surname as JAMES)

Hopefully, you'll be able to get the parents sorted out for William and Evelyn, and soon be within the years available for Census, and BDM especially in Scotland for the FLOCKHARTS.

In case you need to trace her parents too, Evelyn's  birth is propably the following on FreeBMD indexes. I noted on another post her full date of birth is 10 Dec 1922 - this would mean the registration would be expected in  either Dec Qtr 1922 or Mar Qtr 1923:

BIRTH Evelyn J JAMES - Mar Qtr 1923 - District: Blything, Suffolk -Vol 4a , pg 1872, mother's maiden name: SELF.
(Blything was merged in 1935 with 2 other districts, and became Blyth)

If you use FREEBMD and search for births in Blything with surname JAMES and mothers Surname SELF, there are 7 entries (6 girls & 1 boy) between 1912 and 1928 incl. Evelyn. These may be her siblings. The boy's forename is Chester.

If you also search for a marriage in Blything between JAMES and SELF, there is one in 1912:
MARRIAGE : Chester C JAMES and Ethel M SELF - mar Qtr 1812, Blything - 4a - 1331

It seems likely this is probably Evelyn's parents (tho' the marriage, death, or her birth cert with matching birthdate needed to be 100% sure). Chester Charles JAMES was born in 1882 Suffolk and I can see him on 1891 and 1901 Census. Please shout out if you do want transcriptions for these census. Ethel M SELF  -  there are a number of FreeBMD possibilities in Suffolk within timeframe, but have seen a tree on A***nc*try which says she is Ethel Maud born 1889.

Cheers

Wow Ambly,
I can't thank you enough. It is really hard at times to find things when you are dealing with the other side of the world.
(We are not called the land down under for nothing).
In one day, with the help of all the people who responded to my posting - I have found out so much that my son-in-law didn't know. He lost his father early, so didn't get to know him very well, especially as he came back in not the best condition from WW2.
Again, thanks again for your assistance and hard working finding all this.
My daughter is travelling to the UK in a month or so, and she's holidaying with an English friend, so I didn't really want to load her down with "find this" and "find that", now I have some definite things for her to do, and not just a shopping expedition.
Keep in touch, and thank you, thank you, thank you.
