LMA lookup request - Foundling Hospital
« on: Monday 22 June 09 00:51 UTC (UK) »

I think this request may be asking too much as I think it's probably a lot of work, but I will ask nevertheless.  Embarrassed

If anyone is going to the LMA I would be very grateful for a lookup please. IGI extracted record:

Hester Strode
christened 1 Nov 1775
Foundling Hospital Church of England
St Pancras
London

Apparently children admitted to the hospital were baptised and given a new name.

According to the LMA Information Leaflet 31 "Findling your Foundling" the first thing to find is the child's number and name. However the leaflet doesn' tell you how to do this. Once you have the number and name, then you can search various records for further information. Obviously I'm hoping to find Hester's parents ...  Undecided

If anyone is brave enough to attempt this lookup, a link to the Information Leaflet is here:

Thanks very much to anyone who might be able to help. I am indebted to you.

Hello Dawn,

Yes, I would still love a lookup for Hester. As you can see I've had no takers as yet.  Wink

I've recently done this for another chatter

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,393923.0.html

In that one I didn't have a date of baptism but an entry in the census to work from.

To be honest, it will take several visits to get this done. Apart from the baptism register which is on microfilm, all the other documents are 'originals' and have to be ordered. I only get 30mins during my lunch break which is not enough time to do it all in one session. If you miss an 'order' slot (every 20 mins) it'll be another 20 minute wait and then 20 minutes to wait for the documents (40mins).

Once you have found the entry in the baptism register, you'll have their 'number' which goes with them all the time they are there.

You should be able to trace them in the general register which should give a date of birth, an admissions register which will have his mothers name, from that a mother's petition for admission (may contain the reputed father's name) and then finally an entry in the apprentice register.

That's if all the records survive.

I'm away from the office until w/c 14th sept and I already have a pile to do for that week so it'll be w/c 21st at the earliest.

Hi Dawn,

I thought this one might be a lot of work.  Embarrassed

I would feel too guilty to ask you to give up any part of your lunch break to look this up for me, especially as it is such a lengthy time consuming request.

If the general register records still exist for Hester (who I hope is a girl  Wink) which may give her mother/father's name, and if that is not as complicated a search, and if you can fit this into one of your visits and still manage to eat your lunch, then I would be extremely grateful for any help you can give me with this lookup.

Many thanks Dawn.  Kiss

I read the post in your link above - what an interesting and rewarding story.  Smiley

Hi Ruskie

I've done your look-up at the LMA and will now call this topic complete.

I've sent you a pm.
