Where is Grahamstone?
« on: Monday 22 June 09 01:52 UTC (UK) »

I looked up my great grandfather on the 1911 census (he had moved to Newcastle). His place of birth is Grahamstone. I googled it and found that it could be Glasgow or Aberdeen.  I am having such great trouble finding out any more. He was born in 1883 and I can not find any birth record for him on ancestory.com.  If anyone can be of any help i would be greatful.

Hi

What is his name? and do you have any further family names such as parents? If he can be found in an earlier Scottish census then that might help to work out his birthplace.

Scottish births, marriages and deaths are not on Ancestry, they are on Scotlandspeople which is a payperview site.

Thanks Andy.

His name is James Millar (clearly not an uncommon name). I don't know they names of his parents or if he had any brothers or sisters. I think the best idea is to look him up on the records you mention.

Hi

When I search the 1891 & 1901 censuses for people born in Grahamston" they were nearly all born in Grahamston, Stirlingshire (it looks like its now a suburb of Falkirk). There were a handful of Miller/Millar but no James. Do you know if he married? If so, his marriage certificate would have his fathers name which would help.

Thanks Andy.

I completely forgot about that. Sorry! I have never had to look for someone with so little known info and it is not bringing out the best in me. I had to wait years to find out where in Scotland he was from.

Anway his fathers name is George Millar.

Thanks for looking up some details. I am strating to think it is Falkirk and not Glasgow.
