BURGE; 1871 And Before?
« on: Monday 22 June 09 02:18 UTC (UK) »

Sad Doing my bloody head in, this is!

William Burge. Born c. 1819.

I have him, bang to rights, 1881. 'Cutler', Maiden St, Melcombe Regis, Dorset. (Census at A.com)

1872? 'Glass & China Repairer', address in Bristol. (Sons BC).

1871 census? Nuffn!

1870? 'Grinder'. Address in Wells, Somerset. (Another sons BC).

1861 ~ Here's the blinder! Marrying Elizabeth Chubb, in Exeter, Devon. (GRO Records. MC in the post!) But, they're not on the 1861 Census either!  Huh

In fact, the 1881 is the Only census he surfaces on.

Ok. Thanks to people on here, I now see the craic; He wasn't living in a house during the other census nights, so he'd be shoved to the back of the book. Listed with those living in a " Caravan " or a tent, what ever.

Question; How and where, on line, can I access those pages of the census's, please? Especially as all I have to go on is that he was probably somewhere around the West Country?

It's taken me years to find him. Now the slippery little devil's gone right through my fingers, look  Sad

Someone, Please, point me in the right direction?

 Thanks.

Hi Steve G

Have you tried doing a search for your William on Ancestry using only his first name plus age and place of birth? He may be there but with a mis-transcribed surname.

It may be easier once you have his father's name from the marriage cert and you can do a search for both of them.

It was only in 1861 (officially) that people not living in houses were supposed to be listed by their enumerator at the end of their enumeration district books. (You can locate those pages on Ancestry. I'm just checking the process and will get back to you.)

From 1871 onwards they should be listed in among the house-dwellers, in the street, field or yard where they were found.

Best wishes

Hi again

Here's what you need to do to see the List of Persons Not in Houses pages of the 1861 census on Ancestry:

• On the Ancestry.co.uk home page, select 1861 from the UK Census Records box at the top right corner of the page.

• A new search form appears. Go right to the bottom of the page and select 1861 England Census from the list there.

• A new search form appears. Again go right to the very bottom of the page and you'll see a list of English counties. Pick one and you'll be presented with a list of all the civil parishes in the county.

• Click on any one. You'll be presented with two links: one takes you to Page 1 of the census for that place and you'll be able to skip through to the last page from there.

The second link takes you to a description of the enumeration district - ie, the streets/fields/hamlets it covers.

Hope this helps!  Smiley

Best wishes

Doing the latter, on A.com, even as ye read this, Sharon. My connection's nightmarishly slow. But, hey; I've waited Years for this!

Wonder if I can find him? Wish me luck; I'm going in!  Cool

And Thank You Very Much for pointing the way too!  Grin

Well; Just to bring this one up to pace:

I've now found a whole bunch of his people, who I've been hunting for years!  The MC arrived and now I have a lead on his Dad and all sorts Grin

Another wave of Cert's are about to be ordered, on the back of the fresh information I'm gleaning.

But ~ and here's the choker! Absolutely No Sign of Bill and Liz in, Coombe St, on the '61  Sad

Granted, it's a 'Lovely' place. Majority of the properties there were " Hucksters " shops. What we'd remember as 'Junk Shops' and the like. Yet, the people living there seem quite settled. I didn't notice any obvious Lodging Houses.

I've actually shown the MC Here. Note that Slippery Bill is a Widower by then? More work!  Roll Eyes

Bottom line though is that they're simply Not in Coombe St, a month after saying they were.

Moved on? Never really there in the first place? Why not # X Coombe St? Were they in a vardo? If so; Why not " The wagon, bottom of Coombe St. "? Where Did they get to, in the intervening month or so?

Every answer raises more questions  Undecided
