Shipwrecked Orphan 1848-1865
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 01:11 UTC (UK) »

Here is a tricky one with little information - where would I start?
My gg-grandmother was born in Italy abt 1843 and sailed to NZ with her parents and younger brother prob late 1840s or 1850s.
The boat was shipwrecked off the coast (don't know if north or south) and the parents drowned, the children were orphaned.
They may have been adopted here before apparently going back to England in the late 1860s to live with relatives.
Their known names in England were Ann Gittens and John Gittens.
I appreciate without a name of the boat - it could be impossible to find.
However, any suggestions??

Not sure where you are, Skelleyville, but there is a very comprehensive book called "New Zealand Shipwrecks" (8th latest edition 2007) which might help.
Probably a copy in most NZ libraries.

You can check it here

Good Luck

Thanks for that. I'm in Waitakere City so I went to our local library online and found that book, along with a couple of others about NZ shipwrecks.
Will let you know if I find anything.
