Welcome to rootschat hamali Grin

Can you tell us a bit more please?  Where was the ship destined for?  What was its port  of origin- ie where did your relation's mother board the ship?

If you felt you can tell us the name of the person you are trying to trace then maybe that along with the info will mean someone can help.

Hi Alison, Sounds as if it was a Bristih ship.

I don't know what the rules were about registering a birth under those circs.

Someone will come online who knows to look...maybe it is in Consular births but that's a wild guess.
Sorry not to be able to be more helpful.

http://www.reach.net/~sc001198/ShipsPQR1a.htm

From what I can gather from the link above and others: the ship was launched in 1839 and was used by the East India Company.  The link indicates that the vessel sailed to Calcutta in 1839.  Other sources show that British Army soldiers died on board on a return voyage to England in 1841, but don't say where it was coming from.  I'll carry on searching and see if I can find any more background.

Regards

This link has names of people in the East India Company and their BMDs, but annoyingly the source publication started in 1840.  Never-the-less one of the Hamiltons may be yours, if you are aware of any other siblings?

Your best bet for now in tracing his father (by which I mean easiest!) is likely to be by purchasing one or more marriage certificate(s) for him.  An English marriage certificate will/should identify the name and occupation of his father, which would enable you to further your research.

He appears in English censuses as follows:

1861 in Clerkenwell, married to Catherine E, 25 b Camberwell, with a 3-month old son Henry b Clerkenwell: RG9/199/26/7

1871 in Whitefriars, now married to Mary 29 b Kennington (whose mother Elizabeth Payne Pyne* is with them), plus son Henry and 2 further children: RG10/426/21/36

1881-1891 in Hammersmith, still married to Mary.

Anna Smiley

*Having re-looked at this after seeing the marriage, it does say PYNE after all.

There is no Hamilton bith in the GRO Marine Index, which starts in 1837 (but contains very few entries).

The GRO Births at Sea index does not start until 1855 and the first Hamilton birth in that index is 1858.
