Hazelwood House, The Hayway, Rushden - The Groome family
« on: Monday 22 June 09 11:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Does anyone know Rushden well?  I am researching the family of Groome who lived at Hazelwood on The Hayway in Rushden in the early 20th century.  I have found them on the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the area if they could tell me if Hazelwood still exists.

Also, if any one is connected to the Groome family, would love to hear from you.  George Groome was a Shoe Manuafacturer and had four daughters but no sons, he went by the nickname of Gusty Groome!  My researches are at an early stage, so any info welcome.

Carol,
Hull, East Yorkshire

Hello Carolann(that's my name too!)

I live just round the corner from Hayway.
I have a feeling that house is now the memorial clinic.
I will make some enquiries and come back to you.

Groome is a very common name in Rushden and Higham Ferrers.
It's also very odd that you live in Hull....that was my mum's surname, she died last month.

TTFN

Carol

Thanks to Sandy for pointing this thread out to me.

I have discovered that there is a Hazelwood Suite at the Hayway hospital.

Google search Rushden Memorial Clinic, Hayway, Rushden, NN10  6AG.

I'll try and get to the library for you one day next week.

Carol

PS ahhh possibly not- but it is so like that building see here http://www.rushdenheritage.co.uk/health/RMCHistory.html

Hi Carol

Thanks for your replies.

They look very similar don't they, but I think it is a different place.

I've found the family in later Directories, and one of them says Hazelwood was on Highams Road - looking on google maps, that looks like a major road to me, but it must have been different during the early 20th century.  It's possible of course that the house has been demolished, which would be a pity, as it looks beautiful.

Any thoughts on the house being on Highams Road?

I am planning to go to the library today(it's cooler there LOL)and will look up Hazelwood house.

I can't picture a house like that on Higham Road. They're more of the terraced variety up there.I'd have to walk down Hayway to check them all out as many are now hidden behind lots of shrubbery for privacy.

Back later

Well I went to the library, but had no luck I'm afraid.
I spent about 30 mins thumbing through 6 books fo local history but didn't find George Groome or his house  Sad

Contact these people, they are all interested in local projects and I'm sure one of them will be able to help.

Good luck
