Furlongs Wexford
« on: Monday 22 June 09 12:31 BST (UK) »

I have tried many times to find family of my grandfather through his paternal line.  Hope to have more luck with his mothers family.  She was Mary Furlong, married John Walsh, a ships captain.  My grandfather John Joseph was born March 1882 in King Street, Wexford Town.  I know he had a brother James and I think also Thomas but as I don't know granddads pecking order in the family, I have no idea how long his parents were married or even if they were married in the town or perhaps someother part of the county.  One lady helping me suggested it could have been Bannow as there was a marriage shown in Bannows parrish records of JohnWalsh and Mary Furlong.  I did post a picture on the Walsh site hoping someone might spot a family resemblence but beginning to think he may take after the Furlong line.  Hers's hoping someone thinks he looks familiar.  Anne

Dear Ann,

I have been trying to research my family too and I have to say its not too easy as both of my grandparents on my mothers side were furlongs, ie a furlong married a furlong.  I found that Griffiths Valuation of about 1850 was quiet helpful.

Sincerely

Angela

Hi Angela.  Wouldn't it be great if you had ancestors with an unusual name.  Much easier to trace than Walsh or Furlong.  Still I suppose it will be worth it when we finaly make connections.  Anne

The marriage certificate came today.  I now know that my grandparents were married in St Nicholas RC Church, Dublin on 10th October 1906.  One big piece of the jigsaw puzzle.  I was hoping it would give Grandads Wexford address but sadly not, so the quest to find out where he lived in Wexford Town goes on.  At least I know that his father was still alive at the time . We had thought he had died earlier.  Anne

Father's name and occupation are supposed to be listed on the marriage certificate but that doesn't mean that they are still alive at the time of the child's wedding.

ahhhh.  I have seen a couple with 'father not living', so asumed if their occupation was show then they were still alive.  Back to the drawing board.  Thanks Anne

Sometimes the local newspaper gave details not on the certificate like '3rd son of late John Murphy, Waterford', etc. which can be an enormous help.

That would be very helpful but I think he had fallen out with the family for some reason so I don't think it would be in the papers.  If the priest had been more helpful on my last visit to Wexford, I might of found out a little more of his siblings and such.  Never give up.  Will have another try next visit, maybe later in the year.

How about marriages for his siblings- both certificates and newspaper announcements.

I think on my next trip over there I will be back to the library and bury myself in the records.  I have been going over alone but will take a back-up team next time.  It's all there somewhere.  Just need the odd bit of luck and bit by bit it all unravels.  Happy days.
