Dear Ann,
I have been trying to research my family too and I have to say its not too easy as both of my grandparents on my mothers side were furlongs, ie a furlong married a furlong. I found that Griffiths Valuation of about 1850 was quiet helpful.
Sincerely
Angela

(by kind permission of Noel Farrell) As you know the 1911 census for Wexford is online and reading the Furlong & Sunderland queries, these are Furlong & Sutherland in Enniscorthy Roots 1901, and while, perhaps not directly connected, might 'connect dots' in other areas;
Ballycourseymore; Sunderland Michael & Mary;
Castle st (1) Furlong Mary (ex-draper)
Court st (31) Walsh ( Patrick Furlong)
Hospital lane (23) Furlong James, Mary;
Island st ( Furlong Luke & Mary; Paul, Michael, John, William, Mary, Margaret, Matthew. (asylum attendant)
Leimington rd (3) Furlong Nicholas & May; Elizabeth. (surgeon)
Market sq ( Furllong Michael. (shop assistant) (14) O Neill ( John Furlong) (17) Furlong Andrew, Anne, Michael, Ellen (draper)
Monfin; Furlong James & Lizzie; Lily, Walter;
New st (37) Furlong Patrick & Mary; Maggie, Rosanna, Mary, Ellen, Angela, Annie, Patrick, Martha, Robert, James (baker)
Slaney st (6) Royce ( Mary Furlong)
St John's st (3) Furlong Margaret; (31) Furlong Denis (sawyer) (64) Furlong John; (75) Nolan (Michael Furlong)
Shannon Hill (58) Sunderland Michael & Anne; John
Templeshannon (12) Kinsella (James Furlong)
Templeshannon rural (4) Furlong James & Ellen; Mary, Anne, Thomas

Father's name and occupation are supposed to be listed on the marriage certificate but that doesn't mean that they are still alive at the time of the child's wedding.

Sometimes the local newspaper gave details not on the certificate like '3rd son of late John Murphy, Waterford', etc. which can be an enormous help.

How about marriages for his siblings- both certificates and newspaper announcements.
