I am trying to find the baptism and parents of my ancestor, Charles Clack, of Filkins Oxfordshire England. On the IGI Index his birth is recorded as 1736 but there are no sources available and so I do not know if this is correct.
I have searched the PR for Broadwell, Shilton, Alvescot and Westwell but he isn't there.
I have noticed that on several family trees from Ancestry that Samuel Clack, 1704, & Elizabeth Simpson, 1706, are recorded as the parents of Charles but unfortunately there are no sources to verify the fact. These family trees also give his birth as 1736.
If anyone has any information they could share with me I would be most grateful.

Hi Sue
Thanks for looking. I did have the info on their marriages and I do believe Charles & Samuel are brothers but until I find his baptism...Charles is leading me a merry dance.
Regards
Maureen

Hello ....have you tried the PR for St Peter's Church Broughton Poggs ? I was born in Filkins and remember the Clack family still living there in the 1940s and 1950s. Although they lived on the Filkins side of the small millstream which forms the parish boundary between the twin villages of Filkins and Broughton Poggs they were much nearer to Broughton Poggs church and I would imagine the family worshipped there rather than in Filkins church. In the 1700's Filkins was in the parish of Broadwell, but for many villagers Broughton would have been much nearer and I am sure many would have chosen to have their children baptized there.

Thank you very much. You could well be right because their son, Thomas Clack from Filkins, married Ann Lock from Broughton Poggs.
I was interested to hear that you actually knew some Clack's from Filkins in the 40s/50s. Did they still work on the land? I would love to hear about them if you could spare the time.
As luck would have it I am visiting some of the villages where my ancestors came from, including Filkins, Broughton Poggs and Kencot, for a few days next week. I don't suppose you know if any Clack's still reside in the area? I also plan to visit Clanfield, Bampton and Burford.
Thank you so much for your time. I shall certainly look for a baptism in Broughton Poggs.
Kind regards
Maureen

Hello Maureen
As far as I am aware there are no Clack's left in Filkins now. However if you send me your email address I will tell you a little more about what I remember of the family when I was a boy and maybe be able to give you a few more reference points.
Best wishes
Alan ((*))

Derbyshire, Warwick. Yorkshire, Stafford and Worcestershire. In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth.

Charles may have been baptised over the border of Oxford in another county - if he was baptised at all.
It has been sugested by someone who knew the Clack's from Filkins in the 1940s that Broughton Poggs might be worth looking at as the Clack's he knew lived closer to the church in Broughton than the one in Filkins. I also know that Thomas, son of Charles and Mary, married Ann Lock in Broughton Poggs. Ann came from that village. That leads me to another line of enquiry.
You may be right about Northampton being worth a look at but one thing I do know is that the marriage for Charles and Mary took place at Kencot, by licence, in 1759. That is well recorded.
Regards
Maureen
