hi all  Smiley

can anyone locate william ross purgavie born 1888 st clement dundee on
1891/1901 census
i'm trying to establish who his parents were
he married esther smart mcglashan(1886-1972) in 1917 st mary dundee
he is possibly with his brother alexander purgavie(b. 1876) and his wife jane
(1878-1912) and daughter jane(b. 1900) on 1901 census

Hmmm.

There's a William Purgarvie b. 1888 at Dundee living with grandparents & family (the Grays) on the 1891.

Do you think that might be him?  Smiley

Margaret Gray b. 1871 Dundee -  jut weaver
Edward Gray b. 1880 Dundee (grandson)
William Purgarvie b. 1888 Dundee (grandson)

living at 74 Hill St. Will have a look at the 1901...

Gasterlun Gray b. 1829
Ann Strachan b. 1856
Eliza Gray b. 1860
Margrt Gray b. 1871
Willm Purgavie b. 1888 (G. son)

obv think Garsterlun is a transcription error, but is the same family as 1891, do you think it's right?

Unfortunately doesn't help you get any closer to finding his parents yet but if the right people then may start to point in the right direction.

I'd order William's birth cert if you can, that should have parents names etc? It's on Scotlands People where you can view the image.

Sorry for so many messages!

But can only see one match for a marriage between a Purgavie and a Gray. Again is available on Scotlands People, registered in St Mary - Dundee City. James Purgavie and Euphemia Gray.

They're on the 1901 living in Angus with other children Francis, George and Margaret.

If they are William's parents I have no idea why he was with his grandparents - just chance on both census nights or maybe living with them permanently.

that's him
his grand parents would have been james gray and ann ross
i've just used 30 credits downloading all the purgavie births , marriages , and deaths from the index on SP
that's how i knew about his birth and marriage
looks like i'll have to look at his birth cert. to be sure but i think his parents were
james purgavie and euphemia gray
