Samuel Foster Douglas
« on: Friday 19 June 09 12:00 UTC (UK) »

All I know as of now is that he was born in Monifieth, Scotland in 1884, he was one of five children born to Thomas Douglas and Ann. He had two elder sisters (Bella born 1879 and Ethel born 1881) the two brothers were (Joseph born 1886 and Alfred born 1890) In 1901 he was lodging in Edinburgh and working as a "sorting clerk and telegraphist".

He served with the 55th Divisional Signal Company in WW1 and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.

Any info on him or his family would be welcome.

I found his photo on eb*y a few weeks ago

Billy,

I do not think we have the same man.  I wonder if "your" man is a relative?

Thanks for your help

Hi Mark,
I had a look at the IGI for the births of.
Bella,Ethel,Alfred and Joseph , no joy!
It is pos it is too late for the IGI.
I think you should start from a concrete date and work back from there.
You may wish to purchase a copy of a  birth certificate and work back.
you can purchase copies of certs. from the online website www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
kind regards,Billy

Monica,

Thank you!  That certainly looks like Samuel's brother.

It is interesting that both brothers had the same occupation.  Samuel still remains a mystery as to why he enlisted in a St Helens based unit rather than a Scottish one.  I wonder if he joined the RE and was posted to the 55th Div Sigs?

Thanks for your help.
