Finding a death, 1840's
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 17:30 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to find any will or probate left by someone on my tree; the problem is that I can't find his death so am falling at the first hurdle!

This is what I know:

Henry Dalby married Harriet Rawson probably in the 1830's, probably in Leicester but I haven't found the marraige either. Harriet's family were from Leicester.

Henry's only census appearance is in 1841; his name is mistransc on A******* as Henni Dolby (!), living in Cresent Head (?) St Mary's, Leicester, with his daughters Maria age 4 and Fanny age 1. He is shown as a "scholar", age 30, and born in county.

Henry and Harriet also had a son, Henry James Dalby, born in Leicester in 1838. Henry snr's profession on the birth cert is given as Solicitor. I can't find Harriet and Henry jnr on the 1841 census (though both were alive).

By 1851, Harriet was not only widowed, but she was a woman of means. Her children were at boarding schools; Harriet was staying with a family in Busheywood, Herts. In 1861 she was staying in Bloomsbury, and in 1871, with a neice (Emma Rawson Uglow nee Marshall) in Devon. She was described as a "proprietress of houses" and I don't know if the Hertfordshire and Bloomsbury addresses were owned by her - the other occupants aren't family as far as I can tell.

So it seems that Henry died between 1841 and 1851, maybe in Leicester, and left Harriet a wealthy woman, hence my interest in his will. Can anyone help me find a death or any record of any probate etc?

(NB there was another Dalby family including a Henry living in Foxton, Leic at the same time - this is a different family!)

Many thanks for any help.

..and the mother in that family is Harriett too! Thought I'd found something for a minute. Dad, though, is John a Baker, not Henry a solicitor.

I think Harriet and Henry are on 1841 at
HO107 600 18
Enderby Leics

Harriet Dalby 30 Ind
J. Charlesworth 20 Ind
Henery Dalby 3 Ind
Ellen Fewks female servant
John Fletcher male servant

Anc have lumped them together with the Norman family above, but I think the Dalbys are actually a separate household.
