Thanks Cando for posting this for me.  Found a minute this evening to add to it.

1. The actual spelling on the funeral notice was WILMSHURST - sorry bad typing.

I have scanned the little article in the news section of the SMH about the accident.  Janet, if you would like it you can PM me your email address and I can forward it to you.

2.  I have actually found a Wilmshurst death  in a Melbourne paper 1995 - was looking for WILKS lol.  It was for  a Dr John Roy WILMSHURST died in Sydney 18 Oct, son Of Roy (dec) and Jean. If you want any further info on that one let me know.

I would feel  that  the  Ryerson  entry would indicate  that at some point someone  requested a lookup  for  this  death.

Which make me  feel  that a researcher was looking for more family  history.

I  noted when  researching my  family  there is a Shoebridge  there for around 1890,  so  that would  surely  be a lookup request

justmy opinion  for what it is worth Grin

Thanks to everyone for your help. Cheesy

Hmmm!!  I wonder who else might be looking for Wilmshursts?  There are a few people in England that I've had contact with, but as far as I can remember, none of them has followed this family to Australia.

I'll try and comment on some of your findings :
If you  would like  to  see the ships manifest for  the family's arrival in 1886
It's interesting that on the original there are definitely 3 Fred's - if only they'd listed some more information  Huh

Yes, I did use one of the transcription agents, and have sent them a fax today.

The article in the paper about Joseph Wilmshurst makes interesting reading - and reminds me of a book I read about early settlers (my mind's gone blank and I can't think of the title!).

I don't think (SO FAR!) that any of the Wilmshurst/Wilmhursts in the other states are mine - but I'll certainly make a note of their names.  As I said in one of my earlier messages, I'm going over stuff I found when I first started so it's always possible they're linked somehow.

Judith - thank you, I'd be interested to see the article about the "accidental death" and will PM you - it didn't involve the Bicycle club did it? Wink

I hadn't found the deaths of John and Margaret Benecke myself, although I did find Margaret on a few passenger lists to England in the 1950's.  She seemed to be spending time in Canada too and I'd wondered if they'd emigrated there.

Hopefully I'll get some time later to go over all the information and make sure I've not missed anything - there's the added distraction of Wimbledon at the moment too!

Thanks again,

Janet

Hello Janet

There are quite a few Wilmshursts on the Australian National Archives site - includiing 111 pages of personnel records for Dr John Roy W that I found in a Melbourne paper 1995 - was looking for WILKS lol - died in Sydney 18 Oct, son Of Roy (dec) and Jean!!

Some of these I'm sure belong to your Wilmshursts but I couldn't find Edgar.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

Click on NameSearch at the bottom of the page.

The Australian War Memorial also has some Wilmshursts but again I couldn't see Edgar

http://www.awm.gov.au/research/people/

You can also Google the NSW Lancers Association site - they may have more info.  A tip - if you are googling Australian sites use the Aussie Google so you can click on Aussie sites only.

www.google.com.au

There are quite few sites for "Sydney Bicycle Club" to keep you busy some wet Winter afternoon.

Hi Judith,

Thanks for the these links and the tip about .com.au.

I've been looking at the death notice for Edgar that you found for me, and have spotted someone that I hadn't seen before.  I knew that he had two children (Margaret/Madge born in NSW and Frederick J born in California) but there is also a son Walter mentioned.

Do you know if there is any way to check a birth after 1908?

I've found a marriage for a Walter Francis Wilmshurst to Jean Elizabeth Dunbar in 1939 at Chatswood, and a mention in the National Archives for him, born 22.10.1912 in Sydney, NOK Jean Wilmshurst, and on the War Memorial Site he appears as a POW in Malaya.  So far, I haven't been able to find anything to say who his parents were - hopefully Edgar and Margaret.

Also, would someone with more local knowledge have any thoughts about David and Grace Murphy in the Australian Electoral Rolls.

Cando found them in 1930 at 32 Carlisle Street, Rose Bay (an Agent and HD), but I think I've found another David and Grace Murphy in 1930 at Malvern Court Flats, Croydon Avenue, Croydon (Estate Agent and HD) and in 1936 at 24a Brighton Avenue, Croydon Park (Estate Agent and HD).  In 1936 there is also a Sylvia Murphy with them, a Clerk.

Could these be the same couple?  I realise they could have married in another country or state, but the only marriage I could find for a David Murphy to Grace between 1850 and 1930 is David Murphy to Grace Wilmshurst. Undecided

Could they appear twice in 1930 - maybe a home and business address?  Hmmm?

Unfortunately the online births for NSW finish at 1908 so can't see the birth for Walter, unless someone else has better access.

Yes it is not too rare to find the same people twice on an electoral roll.  I suppose sometimes people move and and go on a new roll without being taken off the old one.

Hi,

I received the death certificate transcriptions a couple of days ago and have been able to add a couple more Wilmshursts to my tree.

Frederick Francis, who died two years after he arrived in NSW (of typhus and gangrene of the lungs Embarrassed) had another daughter I didn't know about - Mabel, who was born in Kent but for some reason she doesn't appear on the passenger list with the rest of the family.  I still can't work out who the "extra" Fred on the list is - is it possible someone could have misheard Mabel for Fred??  Huh Roll Eyes

Edgar's accidental death is recorded as "injuries accidently received by a motor cycle of which he was then riding, coming into collision with a motor car throwing him to the roadway".

Jessie died of cancer aged 46, leaving her husband and a six year old son.

I'd love to send for some more transcriptions as there is so much information recorded on them, but for now will concentrate on my more "local" relatives here in England.

Thanks to everyone for all your help  Grin

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for those.  I found the family in the 1930 & 1936 electoral rolls living in Annandale South, NSW - Sydney was a commercial traveller.
