1886 - WILMSHURST Family onboard the "Aigburth"
« on: Monday 22 June 09 17:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi,  I wonder if anyone can help me.

On Ancestry I have found some of my Wilmshurst family arriving in New South Wales onboard the Aigburth on 12.5.1886 (listed as WILMHURST).  All the family (Fred, Mary A, Edgar, Thomas, Edith, Jessie and Maud) seem to be there, plus 3 extras that I'm unsure about (Fred, Fred H and Grace).

I've tried in vain to find more details about the passenger list - can anyone point me in the right direction to find ages, occupations etc?

Thanks,

Janet

Hello Janet,

Have you looked at 1881 census- the family are there. As you have Ancestry, I haven't listed them but you can find them in 1881 anyway for free and then using Anc. will be able to trace them back hopefully.

If you need assistance, please post.

Hi Heywood,

Thanks for that, but sorry, I meant ages and occupations as listed on the passenger list - to see if I can link in the extra Freds and Grace.  I have found the family in the earlier census records.

I was feeling rather pleased with myself because when I first started my family tree about 2 years ago, I "lost" this branch of the family after 1881, but last week I found them on the unassisted passenger lists when having another look at my early attempts!! Grin

I've found various BMD's for them in the New South Wales Registry, but another thing I'd be grateful for help with Roll Eyes, is to try and locate any burial records for Wilmshurst/Wilmhurst in the Petersham, St Peters, Leichhardt areas.

Oh I see  Roll Eyes

There are 2 Graces but both there in 1891 too and as the name is a Kent name, there are a few Fredericks  Undecided

Had wondered if the Freds were repetitions but doesn't account for Grace  Huh

good luck

Cando's comprehensive post  Cheesy made me think of looking at Free BMDs and there is a birth for Grace, December quarter 1881 - perhaps that is this Grace.

Oh that is sad that Fred died just two years after emigrating.

Hi Just adding I see on 1903 ELECTORAL ROLL

CATHERINE ALICE WILMSHURST, Dom. duties
AND
FREDERICK WILMSHURST, Marble mason

Both at 122 Allen Street Leichhardt.

Perhaps the CRYSTAL St. address was his business.

I go to bed and look what appears overnight!!  Thank you so much for all this.

I didn't know about Grace but it looks like she is the last daughter - born after the 1881 census!  As you say, what a pity for Frederick to travel all that way and die two years later.  One of his daughters lived 'til she was 93!

I'm in a bit of a dash at the moment, but will read through everything in more detail later in the day.

Thanks again,

Janet
