Hi All,

I'm sure you're thrilled - Cando and Sue are brilliant! I was thrilled and it's nothing to do with me

Just leave it at Cando please. My efforts are merely murmurings in the background Wink Wink

It is nice to be appreciated however it was just a matter of having the right resources and this am was far too cold in  to venture outside, so what is better than sitting in a lovely warm office helping others....and beats housework any day Grin

Ah Sue you do much more than murmur in the background Wink

Hi
Back to Grace WLMSHURST.

This WW2 service record  caught my eye as a possible son to DAVID and GRACE MURPHY

MURPHY, STEPHEN WILMHURST (sic) seems to have joined the Royal Australian Air Force  and his number was 130874 .  His birth date was 19 Feb 1909 at SYDNEY, NSW  Looks like he enlisted 9 Feb 1943 on  At the time of his enlistment he appears to be living at HAMILTON  and he enlisted at   SYDNEY, NSW  His NOK shows as    MURPHY, MARTHA  Seems he ended his service on 17 Apr 1946and his rank thenwas Leading Aircraftman

This may possibly be his marriage

13289/1931 MURPHY, STEPHEN to WILLIAMS, MARTHA K J @MOSMAN

The MURPHY/WHILMSHURST marriage as Cando has posted took place at MOSMAN

Hi Cando,

I haven't had much time today, but have started to look through all the information that has been found for me.

You say that on the 1903 Electoral Roll, Frederick is listed as a Marble Mason - but I wonder if this could possibly have been Edgar, as Frederick is a Coach Builder in the later census'?  I'd presumed that Frederick, as the oldest son, might have been in a similar business to his father, who was a wheel wright.  Edgar moved to San Fransisco in 1905 and is there on the 1910 census before appearing back in the Sands NSW Directory in 1912.

I'm very tempted to send for some death certificates - especially Edgar with his inscription "accidentally killed"  and Jessie with her "dear mother".   It looks like there's a lot of information recorded on your Australian death certs!

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Janet

Which I posted indicate 2 different occupations for FREDERICK.

They are  from Electoral Roll and Post Office Directory. We do not  have much censuss material available in Australia.

Hi Sue,

Sorry, it's me being confused again - I should have said Electoral Rolls rather than census!   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I did wonder if the "extra" Fred on the passenger list could be a cousin or nephew emigrating with the family, but I've had a look at the eight Frederick Wilmshurst's in my tree and think I've ruled them all out.  Mind you, as I'm going through all the information I found when I first started my tree two years ago, it's always possible that I may find another one who'd fit!

I'm definitely going to follow Cando's links and order the death certificate for Frederick Francis, which will hopefully give me the names of all his children.

The Stephen Wilmhurst Murphy you found certainly looks like he could fit.  You wouldn't believe the number of times the S in the middle gets missed out!  It's a fairly uncommon name in the my area of England and apart from immediate relatives, I'd never spoken to another Wilmshurst until a couple of weeks ago, when I made contact with a second cousin once removed.

Thanks again for your help,

Janet

Hi Jenn,

Good Morning!  Thanks for this - I hadn't seen this site before.  That looks like Edgar, just before he went off to San Francisco in 1905.  There also seems to be a Deceased Estates file for Frederick Francis which would be interesting.  I'll investigate that tomorrow.

I've just ordered the death certificates for Frederick Francis, Edgar and Jessie so will look forward to receiving them in a couple of weeks.

Off to bed now,

Janet

If you  would like  to  see the ships manifest for  the family's arrival in 1886
go to the Mariners in Australian Waters  site  and  search WILMHURST and you will  get  the details  down  the  bottom of  the page is a little red rectangle thingy saying "Scan" click on that and  the copy of  the manifest appears,

Hi Janet

I'm very tempted to send for some death certificates - especially Edgar with his inscription "accidentally killed"  and Jessie with her "dear mother".   It looks like there's a lot of information recorded on your Australian death certs!

WILMSHURST
Edgar
Died 16 Jul 1937  66 years
My husband and our father, accidentally killed
Rookwood Anglican  Section 12  Row 30  Grave 3690

I wonder if our lovely 'chatter Judb would have a look at the Sydney newspapers for his death/funeral notice or perhaps even a news item about his accidental death.

Jenn mentioned the WILMSHURST families in SA.  There appear to be three brothers, William b.1815, Amos b.1827 and Charles b.1825 who emigrated to South Australia - 1839, 1848 and by 1851.  They were the sons of William and Jemima nee TWYMAN all born Pluckley, Kent

http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html
WILMSHURST Amos, Mary Blacklocks n BALCOMB, My, Eliza arrived 1848-08-26 on Constance from London 1848-05-16 v Plymouth 1848-05-26
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1848Constance.htm
Name is mistranscribed.

WILMSHURST William, Sarah n SKINNER / (Augusta) arrived 1839-08-24 on Somersetshire from London
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1839Somersetshire.htm

There is a further information on these families and if you wish, I am happy to type up the info for you Smiley

Australian Electoral Roll NSW 1903 [Not everyone enrolled unfortunately - wasn't compulsory]

WILMSHURST Catherine Alice 122 Allen Street, Leichhardt  Domestic Duties
WILMSHURST Edith Martin, 122 Crystal Street, Petersham  Typist
WILMSHURST Frederick 122 Crystal Street, Petersham  Marble Mason
WILMSHURST Grace  52 Albany Road, Petersham  Switch Attendant
WILMSHURST Jessie  52 Albany Road, Petersham  Dressmaker
WILMSHURST Mary  52 Albany Road, Petersham  Domestic Duties
WILMSHURST Maud  52 Albany Road, Petersham  Teacher.

Australian Electoral Rolls 1930
WILMSHURST Maud  140 Albany Road, Petersham  Teacher
WILMSHURST Mary Ann Martin, 140 Albany Road, Petersham  Home duties
WILMSHURST Edith  140 Albany Road, Petersham  Typiste

WILMSHURST Edgar  489 King Street, St Peters Marble mason
WILMSHURST Margaret 489 King Street, St Peters  HD

I apologise I have made an error in the addresses of Frederick in 1903 - should be 122 Allen Street, Leichhardt but his occupation is listed as Marble Mason; and Edith Martin - should be 118 Crystal Street, Petersham.  Think I need new specs Embarrassed
