Rainham Ferry photo request COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Monday 15 June 09 07:31 UTC (UK) »

Hello everyone.  I am hoping someone here might have a photo circa 1915 of Rainham Ferry that they would be happy to share with me?
Many thanks

I cannot help you directly, but I think you will be lucky because I doubt if Rainham Ferry existed in 1915.  Back in 1952 I worked for Murex at Rainham Ferry which was a huge manufacturing metallurgists and chemical site. It had been established in the mid 1800's in great secrecy on this isolated marshland location over a mile from civilisation and I don't think the German founder would have chosen it if the ferry had still been operating.  This document http://www.havering.gov.uk/media/pdf/g/c/Rainham_CAA_rev_3_16_Feb_07.pdf mentions the ferry briefly and it appears it was made redundant by the advent of the railway in 1854.  British History also gives some information http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42827&strquery=rainham%20ferry

Hi Barry, thank you for your reply.  My great uncle died in a boating accident in Purfleet. The newspaper and the inquest said his body was found at Rainham Ferry, that was in 1915. I am just hoping that someone has a postcard or photo of this place at around that time.  Thanks for the links.

This has some photos of the today's river at Rainham Ferry  http://www.bertuchi.co.uk/loop15.html  It will have been little different in 1915 - isolated, muddy and desolate  The local Council is now Havering and they may have some photos in their local history library, or could put you in touch with a local history society for Rainham.  http://www.havering.gov.uk

Hi,
Havering is pushing some of their history, and well worth it. Anyway, as part of this is the Rainham River walk which includes a visit to the site of the Ferry Inn ( a popular holiday destination in the past).
Here is an old picture http://pubcensus.co.uk/essexpubs/Rainham/thrcrown.aspx
