FREEBMD shows a marriage in the Okehampton district vol 5b page 711 December qtr 1861 between a Thomas HUCKER & Eliza Jane KELLY. A thomas HUCKER aged 48, died in 1868. He is shown in 1861 in service, aged 41, born Butterleigh, Devon. Also shown in the same NEWCOMBE household is Eliza J KELLY aged 22, allegedly born Wales. RG9/1469 North Tawton Enumeration District: 3B Civil Parish: Exbourne Ecclesiastical Parish: Exbourne Folio 27, Page 8, Schedule: 51 Tuckers Park
The 1871 census also givers her age as 32, and she appears to have 3 children: Robt James 9, Mary Ann 7 & Jane 5. They are all in the Union Workhouse, Okehampton RG9/2153 Folio 58, Page 21 Eliza Jane's birthplace is given as Pembroke, Wales, and the 3 children as Sampford Courtenay. She is also shown as widowed, so I must assume that the children shown in the 1881 census were not Thomas HUCKERs!

Thanks again DOB7.So could Eliza be George edward Hucker's mother? This could be a nightmare,I cant find his date of birth anywhere. On another post of mine it said his place of birth was Portishead, Somerset,so i might start looking there. Many thanks Lee.

The 1891 census shows she finally got out of the workhouse: Piece: RG12/1755 Folio 32, Page 20, Schedule: 129 Rose Mary Row HUCKER Eliza J Head W 52 Charwoman b. Pembrokeshire HUCKER William H Son S 17 General Labourer b. Bridestowe, Devon HUCKER George E Son 15 General Labourer b. Portishead, Somerset HUCKER Samuel C Son S 13 General Labourer b. Okehampton, Devon HUCKER Sarah A Dau 12 Scholar b. Okehampton, Devon
Portishead seems to be fairly consistent, so I would suggest looking there.
