I've posted this on the Hants board to, but as Bramshaw was in Wilts at the time referred to am hoping that someone local will recognise the place. William Baby of Bramshaw leaves "all That my Lease hold Eastate Called and Known by the Name of Chipers" to his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1760. Does anyone have any idea whereabouts this would be/have been?? Also, if the property is lease hold are there likely to be any transactions recorded in manorial records? William Baby had two other 'Eastates" in Bramshaw, according to his will, and both are referred to as lease hold - would love to be able to identify these ancestral lands! Ermy

Hi Ermy, I recommend that you try to get sight of the Place-Names of Hampshire volume of the English Place - Names Society. They were published by the Cambridge University Press c. 1939. and contain amazing detail of farms , field names etc. Good luck, Toby.
Thanks, hepburn - yep, I've just picked up the threads of my Baby line again after a long hiatus and have recently been in touch with James who is also a Rootschatter and he is also descended from the same three William Babys (?Babies) as me. Thanks for the book suggestion, Toby - I will follow it up via my local inter-library loan scheme (I've had volumes from the British Library before, all for a £1, which is brilliant). Cheers, Ermy
