Help finding Thomas Pilling got him on 1911 but that's it
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 22:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi

On 1911 census I have Thomas Pilling born either last two quarters of 1877 or first quarter of 1878 in Preston, Lancashire.  He is a general labourer born in Preston, Lancashire.

He married Jane Finegan in 1905 at Holy Trinity, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire.  As Ashton don't have the records for Holy Trinity I will have to go to Manchester, and I cannot get there for another couple of months yet.  So I thought I'd try and find him on 1901 but no luck.

I have check BMDs and I cannot find a Thomas Pilling born Preston that will fit.  I have tried the 1881, 1891 and 1901 but without success.  I thought I'd found him but it turned out to be a transcription error and the only Thomas Pilling that did fit was actually Thomas Melling.

Can anyone find him please?

Any help appreciated - this is a friends tree I am doing out of the goodness of my heart.  I really don't want to spend on the marriage certificate, but waiting for a couple of months is going to be hard.

Is there any chance that it was Prescot rather than Preston where Thomas was born?

There was a Thomas Pilling birth registered March Q 1878 in Prescot district.  He shows up in 1881 (in Ashton in Makerfield) and 1891 (in Sutton) with his parents, Thomas and Sarah.  Thomas senior is a collier.   He isn't obvious in 1901 - but there isn't a likely death registered either.

Hi Galium

Definately says Preston on 1911.  Can't see him getting it wrong - especially as it would have been  written down by him and not the emunerator.  Looks like I'll have to wait to view the marriage certificate.  Think I might put a message on the board to see if anyone is going - perhaps they can look at it for me.

Thanks

It's possible he followed the route taken by my great grandfather. Edward's father died when he was only 4, and his mother remarried. The whole family spent the next two censuses under his stepfather's surname, including 1901 after Edward moved out and was lodging down the street.

In 1903 Edward married, under his birth surname. His brother and wife were witnesses - with his stepfather's surname.

It did not help me that he lied about his age when he married. After that his wife was keeping track, so his death shows him to be 7 years younger than he really was!
