hi my great grand father was born in liverpool. so i want to send away for a birth certificate for him. the trouble is there is 3 other thomas hughes born the same year. so i need to go through the birth certificates one at a time. i found 2 certificates have the same vol number 8b and page number 99 but different quarter times Jan-Feb-mar and Jul-Aug-sep. please can someone tell me how this has happen.thank you

Have you checked the LancashireBMD website to see if the 3 births have been transcribed there? If so - Liverpool will check them for you against the parents names
They will not tell you the parents names - they will only confirm or deny if there is a match to the info you have

The Registry office do not use the same references as the GRO and I doubt they would check all Thomas Hughes births over a 6 month period for you

hi carole liverpool have only 1 for 1879. i think west derby is part of liverpool so my great grandfather could be from that area and put liverpool down on the census because its easy to remember. if he is from west derby I'm looking at 7 thomas hughes to check out. Wayne

If you are taking his year of birth from a census then you have to take into account the date of the census. For example if a person was 2 in the 1881 census which was taken on the 3rd April 1881 then he would have been born 4th April 1878 to the 3rd April 1879. As you had 6 weeks to register then you are looking at births registered between June qtr 1878 and June qtr 1878.

hi Andy
thank you for the information. is that June qtr 1878 and June qtr 1879? on the 1901 census which was taken on the 31st march he was 22yrs old. when he got married in November he was 23yrs old. so his birthday could be between April and November. Wayne

Sorry, yes that should be June Qtr 1878 to June qtr 1879.
If his age has been recorded correctly then yes he would have been born April to November 1878. and registered in the quarters between June 1878 and March 1879. The reason for the March qtr 1879 being a possibility is that you had 6 weeks to register so its possible for a November birth not to be registered until January 1879.

If you do use the GRO, then you can use their reference checking service. You can actually chain a series of requests together, so that if the first one doesn't match, they'll move on to the next one and so on. If one matches, they won't check any further (if you select that option).
You pay £3 or £4 (can't remember which - they refund £3 or £4 for ones that don't match) for each reference checked, so if Liverpool Register Office will check for you, that will be cheaper.

hi
i been sending away for birth certificates using the reference checking service giving them the volume and page number, the trouble I've been having is, they said there is no such record, when i phoned them up they asked me where did i get the birth record from, this has happen on a couple of times now. when i told them freereg and ancestry they said it will take 10 days to look at. back last year they sent out a wrong certificate and thats with a reference check. I'm starting to lose faith in they're service

That's a shame. I've always found them fairly reliable. I have had a couple of wrong certificates (mainly because they've not checked the checking details), and they've quickly refunded me and sent me a prepaid envelope to send the wrong certificate back (for auditing purposes, I suppose).
