Thank you for that detailed answer.  I'm trying to put the bits together.  I have tried both of the databases you mentioned.

That's why I wondered about War Memorials.  Definitely, the family we in the Manchester & Salford area during the war.

Just by chance do you have names and what regiments they were in and poss a service number?

Sorry no!  That's why I'm looking for another source. 

Like I said in the pm, this is friend's family and at the moment I decided not to put the names on, but for all the other sources I've seen, it's not been useful because there are too many variations to choose one of the possibilities.

We reckon they were both army though, and also the older one was a (electrical?) engineer in real  civies and a foreman.   An older brother brought the family to England from Ireland.  They settled in Manchester/Salford, and had their own families there.
